As Prince William and Kate Middleton edge closer to engagement, the Daily Express can exclusively reveal details of their plan to pay tribute to Princess Diana.

According to royal insiders, William is planning to carry out his late mother's wishes for a fairy-tale wedding down to the smallest detail.

An insider told the Daily Express: "William is dedicating his wedding day to his mother. He’s heartbroken she can’t be there.

"Princess Diana talked about what she wanted her sons’ weddings to be like even when she was pregnant with them.

“She often said her wedding was one of the best days of her life, and how she truly felt like a princess. She had so much fun preparing for her big day and all of the intricate detail that went into it.”

Sources close to William and Kate say the couple are already planning a wedding that would make his mother proud - from the music and the floral arrangements to her advice on love.

Following Diana's wishes, William plans to propose to Kate with a sapphire ring he inherited from his mother.

Kate is also expected to pay tribute to Diana’s famous wedding gown by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

The source added: "She wants to put her own modern spin on it. Kate has a minimalist style, so she wants to keep the ruffles to a minimum, and she’s thinking of having bare shoulders, but she loves the color. She wants the same soft eggshell white.”

In another poignant tribute to Diana, Kate is also expected to carry Diana’s favorite flowers, white roses.

Following royal-wedding protocol, William and Kate are likely to marry in a late-morning ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral in central London, and leave the televised service in the same carriage used by Prince Charles and Diana.

Like his parents, William is expected to celebrate his marriage with an intimate reception at Buckingham Palace, where about 120 guests will toast the couple with Dom Pérignon champagne, and a traditional brandy-soaked fruit-and-nut wedding cake.

Insiders believe that William — who shares his mother’s love of music — and Kate will honour Diana during their first dance to her favourite song 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square' by Eric Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin.

William recently told reporters he will be ready to marry after his 28th birthday, which is June 21 this year.

Insiders are predicting a summer engagement, with a royal wedding as early as November in honour of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s November 1947 ceremony.

Conflicting sources suggest they will marry next summer - on the 30th anniversary of Prince Charles and Diana's wedding which took place July 29, 1981.
