A POLICEMAN was jailed yesterday for pulling over women motorists and offering them a deal: “I’ll let you go if you have sex with me.”

Traffic officer Jamie Slater, 33, would stop women for committing offences such as driving through a red light and would then request their phone number.

A court heard how the married father-of-two would later send the women text messages asking them to meet him for sex.

One of the women agreed to his demands and had sex with him in his police car but four others refused. Prosecutor Peter Davies said: “Slater stopped one married woman who was driving alone with only a provisional licence. After taking her personal details Slater told her he would have to impound her car.

She became upset and began crying. “He told her if she gave him her mobile number he would not cause the car to be retained and she agreed to do so.” Cardiff Crown Court heard he later sent her a text message and the pair met for sex in an industrial park.

They continued to meet for sex and on one occasion Slater had to hide the woman in his patrol car when he was called to attend an emergency. Mr Davies said: “He also ran checks on the woman’s husband during their relationship and then sent him taunting text messages.” The woman ended the relationship after a year when Slater’s sexual demands “became more unusual”.

Slater, an officer with South Wales Police for eight years, harassed the women who refused to meet him, the court was told. One woman was pulled over for not having insurance and gave Slater her number when he demanded it.

Mr Davies said: “She received texts from him but refused to meet him. He was annoyed by her lack of response but continued to send her messages. “He would tell her where she had been and what she had been wearing, adding sexual nuances. She felt like she was being stalked.”

The court heard Slater began a relationship with a second woman after he was called to a disturbance at her home. Mr Daviessaid: “He arrived in uniform in his car and suggested they go for a drive. He had sex with her in the police car and they agreed to meet again.”

Another woman, not a motorist, was contacted by Slater and asked to meet for sex after he obtained her details from the police national computer. Slater also had sex with two prostitutes in his car while on duty. His reign of “predatory sex” ended when one woman complained to his senior officers.

When interviewed about his actions, Slater said: “I wanted to be liked.” Tom Crowther, defending, said: “He is full of remorse and he was a good police officer.” Slater, of Port Talbot, South Wales, admitted eight charges of misconductin public office.

Jailing him for three-and-a-half years, Justice Mr David Lloyd Jones said: “These offences were deeply distressing to your victims, all of whom were vulnerable. They felt powerless. “Your activities have done immense damage to public confidence to South Wales Police.”
