TUBE STRIKE OFF BUT MISERY GOES ON

London Underground passengers suffered a second day of travel misery even though a strike by Tube workers over jobs and pensions was called off.

Services on two-thirds of the Tube network remained at a standstill at the start of the morning rush hour and were still not back to normal by the evening exodus.

There were long queues for buses and taxis again because of the knock-on effect of the walkout by 2,300 members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union in a row linked to the collapse of maintenance giant Metronet.

London Underground said it hoped that all services would be running by Thursday.

Transport for London said that guarantees given to the RMT were the same as those given to two other Tube unions who called off their threatened strike earlier in the week.

The RMT called off the strike after talks with TfL on Tuesday.

"Only the RMT can explain why guarantees that were unacceptable on Monday were accepted last night.

"Our priority now is to restore a full service for Londoners as speedily as possible, but obviously it will take time for us to bring the system back to full capacity," said a spokesman.

The RMT said that the talks had yielded progress on the issues involved in the dispute, although it warned that a three day strike planned to start next Monday evening remained, pending the outcome of further meetings in the next few days.

The Transport Salaried Staffs Association announced that it has secured agreement on an overall peace deal to end its dispute with Metronet.

LIFE ON MARS

05.09.07, 1:18am

I re-iterate what I said earlier in another article. Would Bob Crow get away with this behaviour in one of his favourite Communist regimes like Red China, Cuba or North Korea? Unions are there to assist workers with negotiating pay and conditions, not dictating to the workers that they must go out on strike and hold the country to ransom.

That sort of nonsense stopped after the Iron Lady took control and thank goodness too! Communism collapsed in on itself because it went against man's two most basic desires, (after food, clothing, shelter and procreation of the species) the need to have a religion, whatever your belief is: and private enterprise, the desire to better oneself.

WINTER OF DISCONTENT - WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE?

04.09.07, 8:43pm

Sack them all.,and ensure they receive no benefits whilst unemployed. If that causes them some inconvenience then tough. Perhaps it will make them think twice, in future, before causing travel misery for millions of commuters. - Not to mention what it does to the economy.
Employ people who are prepared to sign a no strike contract, and make all essential public services NON UNION.

I remember well when unions ruled - The days of King Arthur, when you had to bury your own dead and widespread power cuts were threatened, we do not want to go back to that.
