Women face a £140 fine while husbands who force their wives to wear the garment could have to pay £28,000 and spend up to a year in jail.

The majority of French people believe the burkha is an affront to the country’s values of “liberte, egalite, fraternite” – freedom, equality, brotherhood.

MPs will vote on July 13 and the bill could be ratified in September.

John Dalhuisen of Amnesty International warned that a ban would “violate the rights to freedom of expression and religion”.
