Capello distanced himself from marks that were given to the England players at the World Cup and promised the FA he would have nothing to do with the index while he is boss.

The England ratings were taken down, but FA sources were frustrated Capello had not managed to have the entire site removed from the internet yesterday evening.

Instead, Capello’s business partners posted a long-winded disclaimer on the front page of the index .

The statement read: “The Capello Index cannot and must not be summarised as ‘The vote given by Capello’ to the players, but is the result of a system capable of analysing and evaluating the actual performance, adding various scientific variables.

“As far as the evaluation of the performance of the players in South Africa is concerned, we would like to clarify Fabio Capello did not contribute in the formulation of the results available online.

“They were obtained thanks to our scientific system that is and remains transparent.”
