OTHER SPORTOWEN HITS NO 40 FOR ENGLAND

Thursday September 13,2007 MICHAEL OWEN fired England a massive step closer to the European Championship finals as he continued his assault on the record books in a 3-0 win over Russia. The talismanic Newcastle ace showed just why he is so vital to England’s cause with a fantastic first-half double in this must-win match at Wembley as Steve McClaren’s men leap-frogged Russia into second spot in Group E. Owen followed up his goal against Israel here on Saturday with two even more important ones. Rio Ferdinand also got on the scoresheet in the 84th minute after an unlikely shimmy in the penalty area and a sharp finish that beat the Russian goalkeeper at his near post. England are nicely tucked behind leaders Croatia who won 6-0 in Andorra – with Owen taking his tally to 40 in 85 internationals.
