But after United conceded twice in added time, an angry Ferguson was looking to sort out his sloppy side, who had

also missed a string of second-half hances. Ferguson believed that Rooney’s time would be better spent attempting to

place his life back on track following a week of front-page headlines alleging the 24-year-old had slept with prostitutes.

He said "We made a decision simply because he gets terrible abuse here. We are not going to subject him to that. We have a fantastic squad. But he will play against Rangers on Tuesday night."

Rooney was the last thing on the United manager's mind following his side's late capitulation. He added "We have thrown the game away. It's amazing. We did the same against Fulham.

"You have to have more determination in situations like this. Some parts of our play were a bit ragged at times."
