A chef spotted the vegetables in the animal area and moved them to a public canteen, but a customer alerted Central Bedfordshire County Council.

Council officer Sally Goodchild said: “I have been told only potatoes and onions were used, presumably as these items were not suitable for animal feed.”

A spokesman at Woburn, which marks its 40th birthday this year, said it was a “one-off” incident, adding: “At no point was there a risk to food safety.”

Staff are to have extra health and safety training.
