Wesley Gordon, now 23, achieved national notoriety when he was expelled from school for tipping custard over a dinner lady.

In the intervening 19 years, his life went into a downward spiral and he built up a lengthy criminal record.

Three years ago Gordon was arrested following the death of 80-year-old Lewis Wiles, who hit his head on the pavement after being pushed by a teenager, but no charges were brought.

Last week a judge at Sheffield Crown Court jailed Gordon for seven and a half years after he admitted the rape of a 19-year-old girl at a house party earlier this year.

Gordon, of Hillsborough, Sheffield, went to a special school from the ages of seven to 11. He was allowed back into mainstream education, but lasted just 12 months before being permanently excluded for hitting a teacher.

He has repeatedly escaped prison despite amassing more than 20 previous convictions, and committed the rape in January just a month after he was given an “exceptional” chance to turn his life around as a judge at Sheffield Crown Court further suspended a pending jail sentence after he attacked his girlfriend.

He received a 52-week suspended jail term the previous May after being convicted of assault, but five months later he was arrested again after punching his girlfriend 10 times following a row over his dangerous driving.

Judge Simon Lawler sentenced Gordon to 48 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, after he pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm and assaulting a police officer.

The judge said that he was giving him an “exceptional chance to put his life in order” but warned him he would be jailed for his next offence.

Last night Gordon’s single mother blamed the authorities for allowing her son to run wild.

June West, aged 50, said: “I have been let down right back to that incident when he was four. I did what I could but he was unruly and I couldn’t control him.”

“The people at social services department just washed their hands of him. I needed help.

“Wesley’s dad left soon after he was born and I think Wesley has seen him about five times over the years.

“Wesley can be violent but rape was something I never expected.

“It shows how low he has sunk, but I fear that when he comes out of prison he will be even worse.”
