He was found with several stab wounds at Kingsway recreation ground in Luton, Beds, on Saturday just after 3pm. The teenager was taken to Luton and Dunstable Hospital but died shortly afterwards.

Officers from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit yesterday appealed for information and said they were hunting a man seen running from the scene.

The man is described as white, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 9in, with distinctive black sideburns. He was said to be wearing a green or grey hooded top, green or grey trousers, possibly combats, and a hat.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Ross, senior investigating officer, said: “The recreation ground was very busy at the time of this incident and we believe the man we are looking for left the scene on foot.”

Yesterday a worker at a nearby garage said: “There was some sort of row. It was all over very quickly. There are lots of rumours going around.”

A post-mortem examination was due to take place yesterday.
