FURIOUS OWEN: I LOVE NEWCASTLE

Owen insists Newcastle is just as important to him

Wednesday October 10,2007

By Julia White for express.co.uk

MICHAEL OWEN has angrily hit back at allegations he is more interested in playing for England than Newcastle.

Owen made an astonishingly quick return to action at the weekend just eight days after undergoing hernia surgery and has declared himself fit for England’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia on Saturday.

The situation has fuelled irritation among some Magpies followers about Owen’s priorities, especially as Sam Allardyce cautioned against the 27-year-old being too heavily involved in international combat over the next fortnight.

But the striker feels he has been wrongly criticised.

Visibly angry as he addressed the issue at England’s Watford base today, he said: “If I was only interested in playing for England, I would not have bust a gut to get myself fit and be available for Newcastle’s game with Everton last Sunday.

“I cannot fathom any of the debate that is going on.

“The injury is no longer. I flew to Munich on Thursday, had the operation on Friday and came back on the Saturday.

“I was walking on Sunday, jogging on Monday and did everything; sprints, blasting balls on Thursday. I trained with the team on Friday and Saturday and was available for Sunday.

“The specialist who carried out the operation in Munich has said exactly what happened and how long my recovery time would be.

“I find it very strange that people question a specialist who has done thousands of operations before, who is saying you could be back in a matter of a few days. That is exactly what has happened.”

His manager Allardyce today also insisted there was no problem with Owen.

He said: “It’s just people trying to get between myself and Michael.

“For me as manager, I have 14 players away on international duty representing their countries, and for each and everyone of them, all I can do is keep my fingers crossed they come back fit and well.”

Owen, whose double against Russia last month saw him become only the fourth player to score 40 goals for England, feels his club loyalty has been questioned virtually since the day he launched his international career with the famous wonder-goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

“It has been stirred up for quite a while, right back to my Liverpool days,” he said.

“I scored for England in the World Cup at such an early age at a time when Liverpool were coming fourth and fifth in the league.

“I remember him [Jamie Carragher] saying that because I made my name with England, I would always be associated with them, that the fans would think I was England’s player rather than Liverpool’s until I won something.

“When we won the (2001 cup) treble, I definitely felt a warmth towards the fans but unfortunately that label has stuck with me right the way through my career.”

Liverpoll aren't the same without Owen and Owen isn't the same without Liverpool and his mates.

WHO'S OWEN WHO?

10.10.07, 6:06pm

Michael Owens abilty ahs never been doubted by anyone who knows anything about sport since he scored against Argentina all those years ago.
His contribution towards Liverpool in those early days was immense and a Liverpool without Owen was in the same bracket as without Gerrard, Carragher, Fowler etc.
He is Red through and through as far as football goes.
Then he made a mistake, pride came before a fall and off he went to Madrid. Every photo from Spain showed a face full of remorse, perhaps even guilt. How do I get back to Liverpool and England was upmost in his mind even if he didn't say it, everyone knew.
Then it all changed Liverpool, rightly so, would not pay more than they sold him for. A calamity called Freddie Sheppard of Newcastle queered the pitch with a silly offer to tempt him, Madrid bluffed, Michael panicked, so desparate was he to be playing regular Prem football in England, he took the loot and the chance to play for England.
If he had played his cards as well as he it is rumoured he is able he should have sat out the brinkmanship with Liverpool and Madrid. Had he done so he would be back where he and his heart belong at Liverpool and his North Wales home and playing for England too. If you believe what he says about Newcastle just ponder that whatever occasion is going on in and around Liverpool and Chester Michael is there, this week it's Jamie Carraghers new restaurant opening, next week??
It is a pity he has been so injury prone, perhaps if he had been patient and waited for Liverpool to call Madrids bluff or in the first place signed a new contract instead of holding out, he would have a Champions League Medal and who knows he might have helped Liverpool win the Premiership.
Liverpool are the same without Owen and Owen isn' the same without Liverpool and his mates.
Who's owen who??
