HELP US TO END NATION'S SHAME
Today the Daily Express launches a crusade to transform the scandalous treatment of our elderly.
If a civilised society is judged by its duty of care towards those who most need its help, then this country should hang its head in shame.
These are people whose hard work – and taxes – have contributed to this country over a lifetime. They have brought up families and lived through war and other hardships.
Yet at a time in their lives when they deserve some appreciation and the opportunity to enjoy their retirement, the elderly are all too often neglected.
Thousands of old people languish in filthy hospital wards, frail and alone, or are abandoned in nursing homes which treat them with shocking disregard. To compound the insult, many are forced to sell everything they own to pay for such care.
We know many of our readers make extraordinary sacrifices to look after elderly parents and loved ones. But the system betrays their efforts and, more to the point, the millions of old people it is supposed to help.
That is why the Daily Express now commits itself to crusade for this forgotten generation.
Over the coming days and weeks, we will highlight why decades of miserly government have decimated specialist wards and care homes and how shocking cases of abuse have been covered up.
More importantly, we’ll show how you can help change things for the better and the measures you can take to improve the lives of your own family and friends.
Together, we can perhaps, at last, give the elderly of Britain the dignity and respect they deserve.

CRUSADE
12.10.07, 8:59am
Good Morning daily express. I wrote yesterday telling of my mothers plight and I have to say I think it goes hand in hand with drugs only available to certain areas where others have to mortgage or even sell their homes the elderly are left to go blind when drugs exist to stop this the same with alzheimers it can be delayed. Stroke patients are ignored and regarded as a waste of space. It would be a good idea for you to post Stroke Help Line and ask them to tell you their stories it will make you weep. Also I am boiling to think Scotland does not have this problem thanks to Gordon Brown and this cold uncaring goverment. Iwish you all the best with your crusade.

THE ELDERLY
12.10.07, 6:31am
my son-in-laws grandmother was taken into hospital
she is frail physically but mentally all there, and as been using incontinent pants for years but the hospital would not give her any said she had to use the bedpan which because of her frailty found very difficult, my son-in-law
DID NOT COMPLAIN but asked why his gran could not have these pants, after he had left the nurse went to gran and shouted at her for complaining which of course upset the old lady, then my son-in-law was told not to come again or he would be reported to the security for anti-social behaviour and removed from the premises and no he was not shouting and carrying on he asked in a proper manner for help for his gran fortunately gran came home a couple of days later
