Express Sport can reveal that the SPL champions have now made an official enquiry about bringing their former striker, who scored 101 goals for his boyhood heroes, back to Ibrox.

Walter Smith is keen to bring in another striker after selling Kenny Miller to Turkish champions Bursaspor for £400,000.

Boyd had previously been Rangers top scorer before he decided to quit for the Riverside on freedom of contract last summer.

The SPL record-breaking striker was initially signed by former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan but his dream move soured after he resigned and was replaced by Tony Mowbray.

Boro manager Mowbray is now prepared to sanction the move as long as Ranger cover his wages. If they don't then Boyd could end up elsewhere with four other clubs also having enquired about the prolific hitman.

The Ibrox hierarchy are now considering whether or not to finalise such a hefty financial deal.

They have the funds from Miller's wage packet and transfer fee but the problem is that Smith also wants to bring in defensive cover, with Portsmouth's Hermann Hreidersson one of the names that have been mentioned.

Rangers had also expressed an interest in fellow Boro' striker Lee Miller but he looks set to follow namesake Kenny Miller and sign a big-money deal with Bursaspor.

The Light Blues are also still monitoring the situation with Derby County and Scotland winger Kris Commons and could offer him a pre-contract to try and tempt him north.
