Police said that they had found two knives on the estate where Miss Grender died, as they continue the search for the murder weapon.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “Officers investigating the murder of Nikitta Grender have arrested a 26-year-old man from the Newport area on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody.

“Officers remain at the scene. Searches are continuing in and around the estate.

“Officers are searching six premises across the city as part of the investigation.

“House-to-house inquiries are continuing and forensic analysis is also continuing.

“The man is not from the Broadmead Park area, Moorland Park or Pontfaen areas.”

The arrest comes after it emerged that Nikitta’s 18-year-old boyfriend, Ryan Mayes, asked to see the dead baby, a daughter.

He was allowed to see the body after doctors removed it from Miss Grender during a post-mortem examination.

Mr Mayes said in a post on social networking site Facebook that his “heart had been ripped open” by the death of Miss Grender, who he described as “the best thing ever created”.

The baby girl had already been named Kelsey-May.

Miss Grender moved in to the flat with Mr Mayes about six months ago.

The couple had already decorated a room in preparation for the baby.
