Avoid all processed meats say cancer experts

Wednesday October 31,2007

By Emily Garnham

HAM and bacon should be cut from our diets to avoid the risk of bowel cancer, a landmark study has shown.

The World Cancer Research Fund study found strong evidence that eating red meat and processed meats such as pastrami, salami, and frankfurters can cause bowel cancer.

The panel – that has reviewed half a million published papers worldwide - recommended that the health conscious should eat less than 18 ounces of red meat per week and avoid processed meat altogether.

The study that will be released on Wednesday, defined processed meat as preserved by smoking, curing, salting or the addition of preservatives. Not all minced meats and hamburgers were considered “processed”.

It also found a direct link between obesity and alcohol intake and the likelihood of falling victim to cancer.

Survey chair Sir Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London, was surprised at these findings.

Beating Bowel Cancer's Rears of the Year

He said: "We have known about obesity and overweight in relation to cardio-vascular disease and diabetes. The idea that it is strongly linked to cancer, I think, is relatively new.”

He also suggested the direct link between increased weight and increased cancer risk was even stronger than the link between cigarettes and cancer:

"With smoking, we know that if you smoke you increase your risk, but most smokers in the end don't get cancer, so it's not a one-to-one relation," he explained.

"With obesity it is very clear and it is a graded phenomenon. The more overweight you are, the more obese you are, the higher the risk of cancer."

A healthy diet is not a guaranteed safeguard against bowel cancer but it lowers the risk

Charity Beating Bowel Cancer – which raises awareness of the disease that claims 50 lives in the UK every day – welcomed the WCRF’s report that “highlights the importance of a well-balanced diet in the prevention of bowel cancer.”

A spokeswoman for the charity, which awarded presenter Sian Lloyd with the title of ‘Rear of The Year’ in 2007, told dailyexpress.co.uk that moderation is key to a healthy diet: “Keeping fit, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking have invaluable benefits for our health.

“Although these factors are
not a guaranteed safeguard against bowel cancer, the report adds weight
to the theory that they lower one's risk of developing the disease” she told us.

THOUGHT POLICE MAKE A MOVE ON BACON!

31.10.07, 7:11pm

Ban bacon? The 'thought police' who like to appease Muslims will love this one! Also, banning ham, pastrami, salami, and frankfurters will hurt our continental cousins more. Does this professor not realise that thanks to the Labour government, we bow to Europe now, they tell us what do?
The guy must live in a fantasy world?
