Once a convenient way of pursuing an interest from home, it is increasingly about gaining qualifications and developing a career.

Many universities and colleges, in response to demands for flexible study options and also to the rising costs of studying full time, now offer a broad selection of undergraduate courses in a distance learning format.

At the University of East London (UEL), more than 2,500 students are enrolled on a range of programmes, including business studies, law, computing and psychology.

They follow structured but flexible timetables, work towards the same goals, receive the same award and have access to the same tutors and specialists as campus-based students.

Sarah Frame, head of the school of distance and e-learning at the (UEL), said: “Demand for distance learning is growing as people recognise the choice and flexibility that it offers. It allows people to combine their studies with work and family

commitments in the way that suits them best.

“Increasingly, students are undertaking distance learning to improve their career prospects.”

At the age of 55, after a successful career in IT management, Tony Sheridan took up the challenge of studying for a law degree with The Open University. Having gained a first class degree he was recently recruited as a trainee with a local firm of solicitors, as one of the oldest trainee lawyers in the country.

Mr Sheridan said: “My experience with the OU gave me the confidence to pursue my ambition and a recognised qualification that has helped me get a training contract in an extremely competitive field.”
