CLEGG AIMS TO SCUPPER ID CARDS PLAN

Monday December 31,2007

Nick Clegg has promised Liberal Democrats a "momentous" first year under his leadership - and said 2008 is the year to "bring down" plans for identity cards.

In a New Year message he urged the party to take an "unparalleled opportunity" to win over millions more voters, setting May's local elections as an early test.

Mr Clegg, who narrowly beat Chris Huhne in the race to succeed Sir Menzies Campbell earlier this month, is the third man in as many New Years to head the party,

But he said he was the one to break the two-party stranglehold by tapping into Britain's natural liberal tendencies and promising to put people "in control of their destinies".

"We have before us an unparalleled opportunity. We must reach beyond the stale two-party system to the millions of people who share our liberal values and change Britain for the better," he said. "Let us show what that means in the local elections that face us this spring."

He said "putting British families back in control of their everyday lives" would be at the heart of his message - whether over ID cards, TV advertising aimed at children or flexible working.

"Giving power and responsibility to families - of every shape and size, of every background - is the only way to make sure everyone has a fair chance in life," he continued. "I believe no-one should be condemned by the circumstances of their birth. And I am certain that is what the British people believe, too.

"We are a nation with a strong sense of fair play, and natural justice. The challenge for our party is to persuade those people that their home is with the Liberal Democrats. We will do it by putting social mobility - a fair deal for every family - at the heart of our message."

He said he would campaign "relentlessly" for spending on pupils from the poorest backgrounds to be raised to the same level as in private schools and would cut taxes for low-income families. In a direct attack on David Cameron's Tories, who have deliberately tried to woo Lib Dem supporters with a liberal message, he said they wanted to "block opportunity not promote it".

Mr Clegg, who has said he is willing to be jailed rather than accept an ID card, concluded: "We should campaign tirelessly to stop the expensive, invasive and unnecessary identity cards scheme in its tracks.

CLEGG AIMS TO SCUPPER ID CARDS PLAN

31.12.07, 2:23pm

You and whose army Mr Clegg? Cleggy is trying to puff-up his self-importance but in reality, he is in charge of a minuscule party that has been haemorrhaging supporters in droves.

There is no point in listening to Cleggy. The Libs have perilously unwise policies (he truly wants an amnesty for illegal immigrants!)

Voting Lib is in nobody's interest. The Libs will never form a government. Voting Lib will only allow Mr Bean with his corrupt and inefficient Marxist henchmen to cling on to power. It is in everyone’s interest to vote strategically to get Mr Bean out of power and out of our lives.

Luckily, people now realise that voting for the Libs is not only a waste of time, but is a very dangerous thing to do.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THE LIB-DEMS

31.12.07, 1:20pm

The Lib-Dems are a joke .. they can say what they want but they will never get to achieve power in this country. All governmemnts must surely know that ID cards will never work, and that NO government would be stupid enough to implement these. The Lib-Dems are a bunch of hypocrites who, in one breath, want no restriction on immigration, yet bleat on about the environment and green issues .. when we know that this country is beyond coping with the people we have on these islands already (massive pressure on hospitals, housing, water supply, roads, social services and benefits, education..et etc) anybody with half a brain knows that, when passports can be faked with ease, and there is already almost no passport checking of people coming in through ports and airports (I know, I see it all the time), the inordinately expensive white elephant that is the introduction of ID cards, could never work.

The Labour Party has said we'd all have to pay for them, and they wouldn't be compulsory anyway. So.. all you get is a bunch of law-abiding British citizens carrying ID cards whilst the criminals and immigrants.. illegal and legal... temporary residents, asylum seekers, visitors from within and without the newly expanded EU (criminal and non-Criminal) etc. would NOT have to carry them.

A good starting point would to be for immigration officers to be told to SWIPE that information strip that we all have on our passports (like the USA does), to SCAN the photos on the passport (like the USA does), at every point of entry, to monitor exactly who is coming in, and who is going out of this country.

But that would be far too easy wouldn't it?
