FOUR HELD OVER TEENAGER'S MURDER

Tuesday January 1,2008

A fourth person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 16-year-old college student who was attacked as he celebrated the New Year.

Bradley Whitfield is thought to have been stabbed with a broken bottle shortly after leaving a party near his home in Leicester..

Leicestershire Police, who detained a 14-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman shortly after the death, have now taken a 34-year-old man into custody, a spokesman confirmed.

Earlier, local people spoke of their shock at the violent death, although none appeared to have any idea of the motive for the killing.

It is known that Bradley was pronounced dead at the scene after officers were called to a report of an assault on Fosse Road South, Leicester.

A 300-yard police cordon remains around the murder scene as forensic officers work at the site, taking measurements and examining what appeares to be fragments of glass.

Meanwhile, friends of Bradley attended the scene to leave bunches of flowers and notes paying tribute to the keen footballer, rugby player and swimmer.

One of the notes - signed by Liam and family - read: "Brad. We had some great times mate - can't believe you have gone. We will miss you always."

Local people said they were shocked that Bradley, who is thought to have been killed after leaving a New Year party, had been targeted.

Shane Faulkner, a close friend of Bradley's family, said: "I am just shocked it has happened to him - he's definitely not that type of lad. He was looking forward to a career as a PE instructor and everyone will tell you the same thing about him - he was never in any kind of trouble."
