HORSES FOUND 'AMONG DEAD ANIMALS'
Animal welfare officers launched a bid to rescue more than 80 neglected horses after they were found in a field with scores of dead animals, the RSPCA has said.
Police officers and staff from the Redwing Horse Sanctuary were helping with the operation in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.
Thames Valley Police arrested one 44-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and criminal damage.
RSPCA found 31 dead horses, ponies and donkeys when they were called to the site over the weekend. The animals had been neglected and left where their bodies had fallen, said animal welfare workers.
They removed 14 animals immediately and three more were in such a poor condition they had to be put to sleep on veterinary advice.
The remaining 84 horses are now being removed and taken to sanctuaries by the RSPCA, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and the International League for the Protection of Horses.
A spokeswoman for the RSPCA could not say if the horses belonged to a private owner or a commercial concern. But she said that it was likely that the charity would seek a prosecution of the horses' owner.
A spokeswoman for Redwings Horse Sanctuary said: "Redwings Horse Sanctuary has travelled to rescues on many occasions but rarely sees cruelty so far advanced that equines are seemingly forgotten and literally left to die.
"All organisations involved in this rescue were deeply concerned about the welfare of the remaining and surviving horses, ponies and donkeys.
"Redwings are hopeful that a prosecution of the owner will follow - for both the deceased equines and those surviving that were considered to be in an unacceptable condition - but it is too early to comment on this in full."
DON'T CONGRATULATE THE RSPCA.

The farm had been reported to the RSPCA on numerous occasions over the last few years and they have been completely ineffective at monitoring the situation.
We'll sadly never know the true extent of suffering as the owners been shipping these poor animals to the continent for god knows how long - no doubt unfit to travel in many cases, without food or water for 48 to 72hour.
We are seeing whats left???
This piece of scum wants the book throwing at him, and be banned from keeping animals for life - 6 months in prison and a fine is too lenient.
Also time to re-open the welfare debate on Live Export!
As for the RSCPA, they've never been good in the equine field, and it's far better to donate to the horse charities like Redwings who pick up the pieces.

the authorities had been made aware of problems regarding animal cruelty for weeks before the swoop by police and RSPCA inspectors. I hope these pykies get punished with the full weight of the law.

this is so sad. I hope the man is punished severely. This is why people MUST help animal shelters and rescue organisations such as the RSPCA and WSPA. There are many thousands more animals not treated well all over the world. They need our help. I lived in Canada where a similar thing happened in Quebec but with husky dogs. He had left them tied up to starve and some adult dogs had eaten the puppies. Just left to drop dead on the spot from starvation.
Thank god for the RSPCA a WSPA. Thank god.

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING

I just feel absolutely shocked and sickened by whats happened on this farm. What will happen to this man now, he will get a fine and a life long ban from looking after animals but what difference will that make when he has neglected these poor animals for so long anyway. He should be sent to prison for a very very long time.
