Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has begun the new year by hitting the bottle – but only to bleach her hair.

Stepping out for the first time in days yesterday, she revealed she had swapped her trademark black beehive for a platinum blonde hairstyle.

Casually dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and sporting leopard print shoes and a bright yellow headscarf, she chose a trip to the newsagent to unveil her newly bleached locks.

The 24-year-old singer, who recently returned from a Caribbean break on the holiday island of Mustique, looked relaxed and at ease with her new style as she strolled into her local store.

Amy’s Back To Black, which also featured the hit Rehab, became the best-selling album of 2007 but the troubled singer hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons following a collapse from a suspected drug overdose and her husband, who she married in May, being jailed on remand in November.

Now it seems the singer is on a mission to start 2008 afresh, beginning with a new look. The singer has also reportedly turned to duetting with her father to raise her spirits. At a recent house party, the star stepped up to the karaoke mike with 57-year-old dad Mitch to belt out a few numbers.

But the loss of the black beehive may come as a shock to her fans. Even the great fashion house Chanel sent its models down the runway in London last month sporting heavy black eyeliner and hairstyles piled high and backcombed. Designer Karl Lagerfield was not afraid to admit his muse was Amy, claiming rather flamboyantly that the heavily-tattooed star is “the new Brigitte Bardot”.

And in hair salons across the UK, the beehive – made famous in the 1960s – has had a renaissance. Amy’s new hairdo, tied up in a headscarf, may owe more to Coronation Street’s Hilda Ogden than Brigitte Bardot.

But it could be the start of a stampede for the bleach bottle before she goes back to black.
