Ringo: Beatles ‘won’t reform’

Ringo Starr last night ruled out any chance of reforming The Beatles with Paul McCartney and the children of the Fab Four.

The former Beatles drummer, speaking before last night’s opening ceremony for Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations, was asked about the pair being joined by George Harrison’s son Dhani to play their hits.

But Ringo, 67, said: “There is no chance of seeing us getting back together with any of our children, there is no chance of us getting back together. It’s very difficult now because two of us have gone.”

George Harrison died of cancer in 2001 and John Lennon was shot dead in 1980.

But Ringo did not rule out the chance of working with Sir Paul in future.

He said: “As players there is no reason why we can’t get back together but don’t get excited about the summer [when McCartney plays in Liverpool], he is on his own.”

Asked why he was not appearing with Sir Paul during the city’s packed year-long list of events, he insisted it was because their diaries did not allow it.

Last night was the first time Ringo – who releases a single, Liverpool 8, on Monday – has played in his home city since 1992 as he kicked off the city’s European Capital of Culture celebrations with two nights of musical entertainment.
