UK MAN'S S AFRICA MURDER: TWO HELD

Saturday January 12,2008

Two men have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of a British father-of-five in front of his family in South Africa.

Fred Picton-Turbervill, 46, was shot in the head a week ago when two gunmen burst into his luxury home in Pretoria.

South African Police confirmed on Saturday that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Wife Ursula Picton-Turbervill, 41, and children Samantha, 10, Bryony, nine, Natasha, six, and Gregory, three, were all present during the break-in.

The couple's two eldest daughters witnessed the killing which happened despite Mr Picton-Turbervill fully co-operating with the raiders.

They then forced his wife to scour the house for jewellery before escaping with four mobile phones, a laptop and around £80 in cash.

Mr Picton-Turbervill ran a successful furniture company in Burnley before moving to the country in 2003. He was born and brought up in south Wales and his parents still live in Bridgend.

News of the arrests was released by the office of the National Commissioner of Police in South Africa.

"Following intensive investigations by Head Office Crime Intelligence and an investigating officer, Sergeant Wimpie van den Heever of Brooklyn police station, two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of 46-year-old Mr Fred Picton-Turbervill," the statement said.

"The two men, one armed with a firearm, entered the Picton-Turbervill property on Aries Street, Waterkloof Ridge on Saturday night and held the family, including four young children, at gunpoint. One of the suspects shot Mr Turbervill in the head, apparently without any warning, and together with his accomplice, made off with 1,000 rand in cash, cellular phones and a laptop."
