HAIN REFUSES TO QUIT OVER DONATIONS

Hain says he won’t stand down

Sunday January 13,2008

By Kirsty Buchanan

PETER Hain last night brushed aside calls to quit and said it was absurd to suggest he had tried to cover up undeclared donations of £100,000.

Fighting for his political life, the Pensions Secretary apologised for the ìembarrassment caused by poor administration and lack of early and clear disclosureî.†

Mr Hain ñ said by close friends to be ìabsolutely lividî about the fiasco ñ insisted he would not go, declaring: ìI will get on with my Cabinet jobsî.

But his defiance failed to silence critics calling for his resignation and warning that serious questions remained unanswered.

Mr Hainís statement was delayed for four hours while ministers and officials went through it with a fine-tooth comb.

In it he apologised ìunreservedlyî for failing to register donations totalling £103,000 for his doomed bid to become deputy leader of the Labour Party ñ equivalent to more than half the total he raised.

But he insisted it was the result of an honest mistake, adding: ìThe notion that there was some attempt by me to hide anything is absurd.î

Mr Hain said he would co-operate with investigations launched by the Electoral Commission and the Parliamentary standards watchdog,†

John Lyon, which could see him suspended from the Commons.

But he failed to clear up the mystery surrounding the Progressive Policies Forum ñ a ìthink tankî which channelled £26,000 in donations and a £25,000 interest-free loan into Mr Hainís campaign.†

The group, launched around the time of Mr Hainís deputy leadership bid, has no staff and produced no reports. Some donors to the PPF said they did not know their cash was being used to bail out Mr Hain, although none have objected so far.

Mr Hain said last night that the PPF had been ìprepared and able to assist in making donations to the campaign and did soî. He said he would be returning the loan to the group.

Downing Street last night said Gordon Brown continued to have ìfull confidenceî in Mr Hain. But the statement failed to ease the pressure on the man now widely tipped for the sack in Mr Brownís first reshuffle, expected in the early summer.†

Elfyn Llwyd, Parliamentary leader of Welsh nationalists Plaid Cymru, said: ìI think we need to know precisely what was the purpose of the PPF. Was it a vehicle for siphoning funds through? On a cursory view, that appears the case. If so, thereís something dodgy going on.

ìTo the best of my knowledge nobody has explained who they are and Peter Hainís statement has not answered that at all.†

ìUnless thatís answered I donít think that the investigation will stop and I still think Peter Hain is in a precarious position. His behaviour has been totally unacceptable.î†

The Tories also said Mr Hain was not in the clear. Shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling said: ìPeter Hainís statement leaves many important questions unanswered.†

ìUnless and until he can provide a proper explanation of these issues his future will remain in real doubt.î

As Mr Hain clung to his job, the blame game continued within his campaign team, with the finger now pointing at campaign treasurer John Underwood.†

Campaign insiders suggest Mr Underwood, who masterminded donations through the PPF, had not kept Mr Hainís campaign office in London informed.

HAIN REFUSES TO QUIT OVER DONATIONS

19.01.08, 9:39am

How much longer are we going to listen to Mr Hain's excuses. He was one of the team who put forward this ruke in the first place and first and foremost should have made sure that every angle was covered before he started his campaign. His own party officials in the Welsh Valleys do not have faith in his excuses, so there is a good start. Gordon Brown wont say a bad word about him as there is more than enough sleeze in his new government already after only a matter of months. The elctorate has had enough. Hain has got to go.

Peter Hain should go, if I made a mistake at work I would have been sacked, so he should go or Brown should sack him.

PETER HAIN, THE NEW CAPTAIN CLINGON?

13.01.08, 10:39pm

Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain has admitted, he failed to declare £103,000 in donations to his deputy leadership campaign and his lame excuse was, " I gave my campaign for office within the Labour Party second priority to my government responsibilities”.

Hain is in charge of a multi-billion pound departmental budget and yet, he cannot manage the expenses of a simple MPs office.

Peter Hain craves political attention and never misses an opportunity to place his face in front of TV cameras to court the British public. Now, his own conduct is in serious doubt, the normally charismatic MP has become very shy and retiring, he presents prepared written statements. This is an old dodge of “There's an enquiry and I will co-operate fully with the investigation”, whilst I scuttle around to see if I can limit the damage and save my political skin!

It has been reported, Mr Hain is making “immediate arrangements” to pay back a £25,000 loan from Willie Nagel, a diamond broker, which he received via PPF in October. Such a nefarious method of funding political elections is bound to cause a stink for a seasoned operator like Hain.

Hain is now putting the blame on aides, who are seemingly at war with each other. I think, a close look at UK Election Law and the strict rules governing members interests in the House of Commons and you will find it's down to the candidate personally and the member personally, to make full and transparent declarations, not aides or ad visor's.

Peter Hain is no different to many politicians, who succumb to the public's distrust in an ever evolving culture of political sleaze and deceit. His current behaviour is so typical of yet another arrogant politician clinging on to his grace and favour lifestyle.

Why do Ministers always wait for further damaging revelations to emerge before we hear their plaintiff cry, “I resign to protect my government and my party”.

This failure to take personal responsibility, attracts the worst of the public's venom and encourages our disdain and generic distrust of all politicians.

THREE CHEERS FOR PETER!

13.01.08, 9:45pm

I am so sorry about my earlier sarcasm! Let me explain.

What I really meant is that Hain is a liability for Labour. That is why I want Labour to fight the next General Election with Hain at the helm. Labour would then score even less votes than it did under Kinnock. Good riddance.

If you read my earlier post again, you will see that I never said they could win!
