OLYMPICS 'MAY FACE £1BN BLACK HOLE'

Tuesday January 15,2008

The Government has firmly rejected claims of a £1bn "black hole" in its plans to fund the 2012 London Olympics.

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell and London Mayor Ken Livingstone say that they will be able to recoup £1.8bn following the Games from land sales at the Olympic site in east London.

But reports claim a London Development Agency warns that, if land prices increase by 6% annually over the coming years, it may be possible to raise only £800m.

Some of the cash from land sales is intended to go the National Lottery to repay loans used to fund the Games and to ensure that other lottery-funded good causes do not lose out. Any shortfall in that money could hit heritage, sports and arts projects.

The report came as MPs prepared to approve the use of lottery funds to support the Games in a House of Commons vote on the Olympic Lottery Distribution Fund Order.

A spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport denied it had over-estimated the amount of money that could be raised in a post-Olympics land sale.

The £800m figure was simply the lowest in a range of projections in the LDA report, which suggested that as much as £3bn could be raised if market conditions were favourable, he said.

The spokesman said: "There is absolutely no black hole in the 2012 finances, and these claims are completely misleading and a distortion of the facts.

"The £800m quoted is the most cautious of a range of LDA projections of how much might be raised by land sales in the Olympic Park, based on 6% per annum growth.

"This is significantly less than the average rate of increase over the last 20 years - a period that has included both economic highs and lows."

" TONGUE IN JOWELL " !!! PUN INTENDED ?

15.01.08, 12:33pm

Can you imagine your shock and horror if Talentless Tessa was ever in position to organise your Kids sports day !!

If would start off well enough , but by the time the sports day was to take place : the school would have to sell off 90% of its assets, sack 50% of the classroom staff, sell all the playing fields and most of the playground to local builders, and the local councli tax would have risen to an average payment of £800 per month ?

And the total amount of "Sports" would have amounted to 1 x relay of Mixed ethnic (Halal)egg and spoon race,
finishing with ...........an all out group hug and disscussion regarding the Reaching out to console the poor sod which managed to trail in last (again)

Mind how you go !

KEN'S POISONED PILL?

15.01.08, 12:17pm

Good old Ken. Londoners have a lot to thank you for. Your £1bn black hole will be not be added to Londoner's Council Tax bills until AFTER the London Mayor elections. Londoner's will seriously thank you for that.

BLACK HOLE OR RED HOLE

15.01.08, 11:30am

Why am I not surprised?
What it really needs is a few think tanks to carry our a feasibility study. Should be easy to arrange and when the contracts are sent out to would be donors, the millions will pour in to the Labour Party for their next Black Hole scheme to rip us off.

Getting rid of Livingstone should be the prime objective of all Londoners followed by Labour asap.
