DIANA ‘WOULD STILL BE ALIVE IF SHE HAD POLICE PROTECTION’

Lord Condon said Diana refused police protection

Thursday January 17,2008

By Nicola McCafferty for express.co.uk

THE Metropolitan Police Commissioner at the time of Diana's death said the Princess would 'not have lost her life' had she had police protection, he told the inquest today.

Lord Condon said he begged Diana to reconsider after she said she no longer wanted protection from the Metropolitan Police.

The former Met chief said there were numerous meetings after the Princess made the decision in December 1993 in a bid to change her mind, but the efforts were unsuccessful.

He told the High Court in central London: “Let me be absolutely frank. If as my wish, she would have had police protection in Paris, then I’m absolutely convinced those three lives would not have been tragically lost.

Her problem with protection was, sadly, that she did not have police protection. I wish she had.“

Lord Condon said he had been given the first indications that Diana was ready to have her protection removed in December 1993.

Following this, a series of meetings were held until late January 1994.

He said there was a “critical” meeting which he attended on December 14 1993, in which he said he was “really concerned” that the security was going to be removed.

The following day, Lord Condon was involved in a serious accident and was unavailable for around three and a half to four weeks.

He said: “I have often thought back, if that had not been the sequence of events I might have demanded face to face meetings with her. But I honestly don’t think it would have changed her mind.

The inquest heard that during an October 1994 meeting Diana had with Deputy Assistant Commissioner David Meynell, in charge of Royalty and Diplomatic Protection, she asked whether there was a device in her car or if her phone calls were being monitored, suggesting police were involved.

Michael Mansfield, QC counsel for Mohamed al Fayed, suggested that Diana did not trust the police.

Lord Condon said: “Clearly she had decided in her own mind sadly, that the police, if they were on anyone’s side, were not on her side.

“That was wrong but I think it was a view that I think I would have found it very hard to change her mind about.”

Mr Mansfield continued: "I'm going to make it plain to you, Lord Condon, that the reason why potentially relevant material was not handed to the coroner immediately, and in fact not at all, until Paul Burrell put his letter in the public domain ... was that you were sitting on it knowing that something had gone wrong in Paris linked to the work of British state agencies."

The coroner interrupted to ask: "You are suggesting, are you, that Lord Condon was part of a criminal conspiracy?"

Mr Mansfield replied: "Yes."

Seems MI6 used a Condon .!
