TOGETHERNESS: Sarkozy and Carla Bruni

Wednesday January 23,2008

By Peter Allen in Paris

FORMER supermodel Carla Bruni yesterday spoke for the first time about the “hurricane of madness” surrounding her becoming the live-in lover of French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

In the latest twist in the Gallic soap opera, the singer officially denied wedding rumours, saying they were “not yet married. Even if we are planning to.”

Her words ended rumours that they secretly wed last week.

Miss Bruni, 40, who met her twice-divorced lover in November, also confirmed that her status is not officially recognised.

This means she cannot accompany Mr Sarkozy, 52,  to India this week or on a state visit to Britain in March when the French President will stay with the Queen at Windsor Castle.

“I cannot take part in an official visit with the President,” said Miss Bruni, highlighting the problems of being an unmarried presidential partner – the first in the history of the Fifth Republic.
