BSKYB TOLD TO CUT ITV STAKE
John Hutton told Sky to reduce ITV shareholding below 7.5%
Broadcasting giant BSkyB has said it will take a £343 million hit after being told to ditch more than half its controversial 17.9% stake in ITV.
Business Secretary John Hutton has ordered Sky to sell-down the shareholding to below 7.5% to address competition concerns.
BSkyB now faces steep losses on the ITV stake after seeing the group's share price plummet amid concerns over advertising revenues.
The holding is now worth less than two-thirds of the £940 million originally paid in November 2006.
Sky confirmed it will have to make the £343 million write-down in its half-year results, due out next week. It is estimated that Sky's direct cash loss could total about £250 million.
The Government has agreed to keep quiet on how long Sky has been given to offload the shares in an apparent concession in the ruling.
It is thought that Sky pressed for up to 20 months to complete the share sell-off.
Six months is considered the typical timeframe given by competition watchdogs for share divestments, although ITV pushed for Sky to sell-down the stake within three months.
Sky now has until February 25 to appeal against the decision, which supports recommendations made last month by the Competition Commission. ITV said it "warmly welcomed" the ruling.
Analysts said attentions will now turn to which firms may be interested in buying Sky's stake, with the share sale thought to make ITV an attractive target once more for takeover.

The govt should take it further and go back to the original satellite foramt and divide sky and bsb into two competing companies. The digital age is with us so increase competiton and reduce the costs to the viewer.
On the licence fee , the govt should rduce the viewers stake in the bbc by direct taxation to 100 pounds and amke up reducing investemnt in defence or by heavily taxing corporations and the rich. The govt should be the servant and provider to the nations broadcaster and not its paymaster.

BSKYB HOLDING IN ITV

Now that BSkyB has to reduce it's holding in ITV as it is not in the best interest of it's shareholders, can we now assume that the shareholders (tax payers)can now reduce their holding in the BBC because of the excessive influence of the govt. This is just a spitefull reaction by the govt. because they are unable to control the BSkyB media in the same way as the lousy BBC governors who seem to have no interaction with the average viewer. Let us hope this disgusting govt. suffers a backlash through the media at the next election when the voters are reminded truthfully just what this govt have done to the country.
