DEREK CONWAY: 'I'M NOT A CROOK'
Derek Conway maintains he has done nothing wrong
By Emily Garnham for express.co.uk
THE MP at the centre of a scandal over House of Commons expenses protested his innocence last night, rejecting claims his sons had done little or no work for tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money.
Derek Conway insisted he had done nothing wrong in employing his two sons Henry and Freddie as researchers.
In his first interview since the report from the Commons Standards
and Privileges Committee, Mr Conway told a Sunday newspaper: “I am not
a crook... I still believe I have done nothing wrong.”
Monday's report claimed there was no record of Freddie, a full-time student at
Newcastle University, performing any work in return for the £40,000 he
received over three years and said he was “all but invisible” at
Westminster.
The arrangement was “at the least an improper use of parliamentary
allowances” and “at worst, a serious diversion of public funds”, said
the report.

But Mr Conway claimed both boys did the work for which they were paid.
Freddie, 22, would regularly make the three-hour journey back from
Newcastle to go through his father’s post and emails at home in London,
as well as working for him during the long university holidays, he said.
“He used to come home frequently. He would go up and down like a
fiddler’s elbow while he was away,” Mr Conway told the newspaper.

“There are MPs who commute greater distances than that on a weekly
basis and some are three times Freddie’s age. I don’t think it was
unusual,” he added.
The reason Freddie and Henry, 25, seemed invisible at Westminster was
because they worked from the Conways’ flat in nearby Victoria, he said.
“Lots of MPs have family who work from home,” said Mr Conway. “I’m not unique at all.”
He said Henry would open post, check emails and stuff envelopes.
Mr Conway also denounced “homophobic” media reports concerning his elder son's Henry’s sexuality and his work as a party promoter.
He said he had known “for a long time” that Henry was gay and always supported him. He described his son as “a lovely boy”.
Mr Conway also rejected allegations that he employed another
researcher, Michael Pratte, because he was a friend of his sons. In
fact, Mr Pratte met Freddie and Henry only after joining his office, he
said.
The Old Bexley and Sidcup MP said he could understand public outrage at
reports of him using taxpayers’ money to employ family members as “the
public believe all politicians have their snouts in the trough”.
But he made clear he suspected some of his parliamentary critics had ulterior motives.
He accused Labour of wanting to take the heat off itself because of pressure on Gordon Brown over Alan Johnson and Peter Hain.
Mr Conway denied that MPs were overpaid for their work, pointing out
that he took a cut in salary when he left the £80,000-a-year post of
chief executive of the Cats Protection League to return to the Commons
in 2001 and will receive a pension of £24,000 when he retires.
He suggested a fair salary for a backbench MP would be £80,000 to £100,000, rather than their current £60,000.
His wife Colette, who works as his Commons secretary, told the
newspaper she supported her husband and sons whom she said had done
nothing wrong.
Mr Conway announced last week that he will stand down as an MP at the coming General Election, after David Cameron withdrew the Conservative whip.
He is facing a possible second inquiry into the job he gave his elder son Henry, while Scotland Yard are considering a demand for a police probe to examine allegations of fraud.
I'M NOT A CROOK

As one respondent has already stated, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Sadly MP's have been allowed to run riot with claims for postages and allowances and now it's time to put an end to it all. The majority of the electorate are either not aware or don't care less about what MP's do,until something affects them then they all start shouting. The salaries/Allowances & pensions are more than enough and they should be doing their own secretarial/research work as well as answering correspondence/e-mails etc, and they should not be allowed to employ family. If they wish their wives & family to work for them, then those hours should be done outside Parliament without cost to the taxpayer. When you look at the miserable number of MP's in the commons for debates etc, the whole bang lot of them should be ashamed to call themselves MP's.

The man should be publicly horsewhipped for what he has done. If it looks like a dung heap and smells like a dung heap, it is probably a dung heap and this man smells like a crook.
Only a crook would be shameless enough to hang on and keep his snout in the trough for another 2 years, even though he's been caught out. What a star.

RICHARD NIXON: "I AM NOT A CROOK"
03.02.08, 8:38pm
That's where I heard the line before!
Richard Nixon of Watergate fame said "I am not a crook".
Now we have Derek Conman of SheridanBucket-gate saying "I am not a crook".
I trust that, like Nixon, Conman will very soon RESIGN. Oh yes -- and pay back all the money he siphoned off to his family and his son's mate.
