RACE ABUSE OF F1 STAR HAMILTON

Monday February 4,2008

Spectators have shouted racist abuse at Lewis Hamilton as the British Formula One driver took part in a pre-season test in Spain, according to reports.

Hamilton, 23, was jeered and insulted when he moved between the McLaren motor home and the team's garage at the Circuit de Catalunya, in Montmelo, near Barcelona.

Formula One's governing body, the FIA, has now warned that any repeat of the abuse will result in action.

Reports suggest the FIA may even consider stripping the Circuit de Catalunya of its Grand Prix.

According to reports in the Spanish press, circuit director Ramon Pradera instructed staff to erect barriers around the team's paddock because of fears for Hamilton's safety.

Banners were removed and the stands directly above McLaren's garage were cleared of spectators to ensure that no debris could be thrown down when the car returned to the pit lane.

"We would like to make a plea to the fans to behave correctly," Mr Pradera said. "No type of offensive behaviour can be tolerated."

A spokesman for the FIA said: "The FIA is surprised and disappointed at the abuse directed at Lewis Hamilton.

"An act of this kind is a clear breach of the principles enshrined in the FIA statutes and any repetition will result in sanctions."

Last season, Spanish driver Fernando Alonso failed to clinch a third straight championship after he joined McLaren from Renault. Alonso finished third in the drivers' standings, while rookie Hamilton was second. Alonso has since rejoined Renault.

OVER RATED

05.02.08, 7:52am

he is over rated, alonso is the better driver and was badly treated by mcclaren,i was their biggest supporter but not any more, put button or any one else in hamiltons car and they would be at least as good as him (button better) i will be hoping mcclaren finish down the field in future, hamilton is nothing but a cocky brat who thinks he is god, he is very over rated and losing supporters all the time, and if itv television commentators listen to themselves going on about him all the time, they would realise how stupid they are acting,he is no m schumacer and never will be. barrie2

WE HAVE THE B**LS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT RACISM, WHEN WE INTRODUCED THE "SKINHEADS & HOOLIGANS" INTO SPORT !!

04.02.08, 9:12pm

it would'nt surprise me a bit if it did'nt turn out to be a few british fans who were the cause of all this! it is very rare that spaniards act in a racial manner, unless provoked by a group who are.
why is it always the british who attract this kind of behaviour! why not the french!, germans! or any other country for that matter!. if gerry sutcliffe has nothing else to do but create a diplomatic incident, perhaps that would deter fans travelling to spain, which will no doubt solve any further such incidents.

DISGRACEFULL

04.02.08, 3:53pm

This abuse is disgraceful and the Spanish should loose their entitlement to a grand prix. But as for the UK government getting involved why, Hamilton decided to ditch the UK so he could save a few bob in tax he has shown little loyalty to us.

RACE ABUSE

04.02.08, 12:23pm

He must have really good ears to hear the racial abuse above the roar of the car engines! I expect that this is going to be another limp excuse when he turns in a poor performance. Just ignore these people They will soon get fed up and go away. Publicising it will only make it worse, and grow a backbone.

JUST SOUR GRAPES

04.02.08, 8:04am

In response, why don't we rescind the fishing licenses of all Spanish Fishing vessels and give them back to our own fishermen?
