Dismal Williams does not deserve to lead church

DR Rowan Williams represents all that is wrong with the liberal establishment that runs this country. The Archbishop of Canterbury is so consumed with post-imperial guilt that he has been blinded to the virtues of Britain.

For Dr Williams to declare that allowing the development of Islamic sharia law in this country “seems unavoidable” is to take cultural surrender to new levels.

It is amazing that the pre-eminent cleric in a Christian nation’s established church should excuse Muslims from the need to show loyalty to the state or to live by the rules that others are expected to obey.

This is a dangerous moment in our national story.

The doctrine of multiculturalism has allowed the sprouting of communities in our midst that have no affiliation to the values of the majority.

Any responsible religious leader should be devoted to countering the formation of such hostile ghettos, not excusing and encouraging them.

It is telling that the two senior Anglican clerics who best understand this both come from abroad. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, and the Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, realise that appeasement will not work with militant Islam.

The former was born in Uganda and the latter in Pakistan. Both recognise that freedom, democracy and tolerance are fragile entities which must be fought for and defended.

The clueless Dr Williams knows nothing of this.

He is a mediocrity and, as a self-confessed “bearded Leftie”, a cringeworthy social cliché.

Fortunately for Anglicans, the Queen is both supreme governor of the Church of England and defender of the faith.

Dr Williams is the defender of nothing.

To describe him as a turbulent priest would be to unduly glamorise him. But it is certainly time the Church was rid of him.
