WHY GARLIC IS NO LONGER THE KISS OF DEATH

PUNGENT: But we love garlic

Sunday February 24,2008

By Carolyn Armstrong

IT was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians and for centuries has been popular for fending off vampires.

But garlic was always seen as the kiss of death for the hopes of would-be lovers making a move on the object of their affection.

Until now. For a new survey reveals that garlic breath is no longer the turn-off that it once was.

Nine in 10 of us claim not to mind if our date has been wrapping his or her lips around the pungent plant before getting up close and personal.

The results are good news for the millions of fans of the bulb, now rated our most popular aromatic accompaniment ahead of previous choices parsley and basil.

Old wives’ tales die hard, though. Of the 2,700 people questioned for the survey, 16 per cent still thought it could ward off Dracula as well as unwanted suitors.

The research, by restaurant chain Pizza Hut, shows that men and women have different attitudes towards the smell.

It claimed women are 20 per cent more likely to try to eat garlic – well known for its perceived health benefits including the prevention of heart disease – while men are 50 per cent more likely to turn up their noses up at a garlic-smelling partner.

After years of being lampooned as an ingredient in smelly foreign food,  garlic is one of the most important ingredients in modern food for three-quarters of Britain’s cooks.

And more than two-thirds say they eat more garlic today than they were eating 10 years ago.

Pizza Hut spokesman Hugh Wood said: “There is something about the aroma of cooked garlic.

“Its unique smell can almost let you begin to taste the food before you actually take your first bite. It means that the whole eating experience is enhanced with extra garlic flavour.”

Peter Josling, of The Garlic Information Centre, said: “We’re now eating more garlic than before. It’s  great to see so many people enjoying garlic in a variety of foods.

“It was only a matter of time before it became the primary flavour of a main course and not just a starter.

“This new research has shown just how much in love the country has become with it.

“I know that I eat garlic every day and I think everyone should.”
