BRING IN CHAIN GANGS FOR CRIMINALS SAYS MOTHER OF SHOT GIRL
PLATTS: Would like to see hard labour where sentencing is concerned
By Macer Hall, Political Editor
THE mother of a murdered schoolgirl called yesterday for American-style chain gangs to be introduced for criminals in Britain.
Paula Platt’s 14-year-old daughter Danielle Beccan was gunned down in a drive-by shooting which shocked the nation.
She argued that only a prison regime of hard labour would offer a genuine deterrent to violent crime.
And she claimed modern prisons in the UK were like “holiday camps”.

Her demand follows a series of high-profile murder cases which have provoked a new debate over punishment, including calls for a return of the death penalty.
Mrs Platt, 35, spoke out after giving evidence at an inquiry into policing set up by the Commons home affairs committee.
She spoke to the MPs in private but made clear her views on Britain’s allegedly soft criminal justice system afterwards.
“I would like to see hard labour where sentencing is concerned,” she said. “On the American films you see guys in chain gangs who have to do hard labour.”
Mrs Platt, who is opposed to capital punishment, added: “What can the Government do as a deterrent to violent crime? A young man on the street is not bothered about prison.
“For some people prison is a holiday camp. They get three square meals a day, a gym and satellite TV.”
In the US, hardline Sheriff Joe Arpaio has earned plaudits for introducing gruelling chain gang punishments in Arizona. On a recent visit to Britain he too compared Britain’s prisons to holiday camps.
In the past, Labour ministers have called for chain-gang style community punishment, but there is no sign their suggestions will be adopted by the Home Office. Former Home Office minister Hazel Blears called for “intense, high-profile” community work for convicted thugs.
Lord Falconer, former Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary admitted yesterday Mrs Platt’s comments were further evidence that the criminal justice system is failing the public.
He told the inquiry: “It is significant that part of the evidence has come from Paula Platt who has been a victim of crime in a way most of us would find hard to imagine.”
Danielle was shot as she walked home from Nottingham’s Goose Fair in October 2004. Two men aged 20 and 24 were later jailed for her murder.
The committee will also hear from other victims of crime, including Helen Newlove, widow of Garry Newlove. He was beaten to death by yobs as he tried to protect his home.
AT LAST .. A GLIMMER OF HOPE ....

Lets hope the government listens and acts accordingly to Mrs Platts comments.
It is obvious that our punishment system is not working, so it has to be changed.
There is one thing for sure, career criminals do not see sense and change their ways, society through the punishment system has to change their minds for them.
Life in jail is too cushy for them now, they have no fear, that should tell the goverment where to start.

Life in prison should mean exactly that...but in a new prison. I know exactly where it should be - Nightingale. It is a little island; on a clear day you can just see it from Tristan da Cunha.

BRING BACK THE STOCKS
26.02.08, 10:27am
Put these criminals in the stocks so that people can form an orderly queue to line up and spit in their faces or throw rotton fruit at them. Time and time again some hand-wringing apologist stands up for these scumbags to excuse their behaviour. There is right and there is wrong, we all have a choice, there is no excuse for making the wrong choice.

CHAIN GANGS

This sounds like a good idea until you begin to think about where these chain-gangs might operate. We don't have the equivalent of the Arizona desert in the UK.
Maybe prisons to house violent criminals and drug-peddlers ought to be built on some remote uninhabited island beyond the reach of the human rights brigade. It's high time that Devil's Island was open for business again.

IF THE DEATH PENALTY CAN NOT BE BROUGHT BACK
26.02.08, 8:39am
For violent criminals that murder with premeditation and with hatred then prison should be a much harsher environment.
Chain gangs......why not ?
Hard physical labour should be part of the punishment.
There should be no televisions.
No recreation facilities
Food should be sustaining but not plentiful
Mrs Platt is right.
She has lost her daughter and she will suffer a life sentence.
Why should the murderer have a cushy number in jail.
Despicable man
Despicable society that cares more for the criminal than the victim !
