O'Connell stages Beatles ban

DON'T tell Macca but his contemporary in the pop legend stakes, The Who’s Roger Daltrey, right, has surprisingly come out in support of a Beatles ban on a popular national breakfast radio show.

Virgin Radio DJ Christian O’Connell, a self-confessed Beatles fan, was torn when members of the public apparently hounded the station with calls requesting him to stop playing the Fab Four’s songs on his show – apparently the quartet are “over-rated” – so he sought the advice of Roger to help him decide.

The 63-year-old rock icon – whose band’s songs vied with the Beatles in the charts during the Sixties – was quick to align himself with the show’s listeners.

“I didn’t like all their music. I can understand that everything has its sell-by date,” he said.

And with such a vehement response, Christian felt impelled to give the iconic Liverpudlian band the boot.

“I love the Beatles. I’ve always been a big fan of Paul McCartney and as a station we’ve always supported them. I’m surprised and disappointed by the decision but it’s my duty to honour it,” adds the DJ.

Do we smell a publicity stunt here?
