GIVE US BANGERS AND POST

Prince Harry eating a breakfast of biscuits mixed with jam and butter

Sunday March 2,2008

By Camilla Tominey

PRINCE Harry has turned campaigner to improve food on the frontline and speed up post to soldiers.

He has called on celebrity chefs  including Jamie Oliver to give troops in Afghanistan a taste of home.

And he said mail is critical for troops’ morale.

Harry, who spent weeks surviving on the distinctive brown Ministry of Defence-issue boxed rations, said: “Bangers and mash with gravy, in a bag, would be brilliant.”

Responding to the suggestion that Jamie Oliver might oblige, he said: “Yeah, Jamie, please.”

The third-in-line to the throne – a self-confessed Big Mac fan – said the 24-hour ration packs issued to troops in the field were “miserable”.

As well as wholemeal biscuits and “brew kits” for tea, the packs contain three boil-in-the-bag meals.

Options range from the highly prized chicken tikka masala with a separate bag of rice, or breakfast sausage, egg and beans, to the universally-derided corned beef hash.

Harry also criticised the postal system for troops in Afghanistan as “pants” and told how he finally received a Christmas card from his father, Prince Charles, in February.

Among letters he did receive was one from his brother William telling him that their mother, Princess Diana, would have been proud of him serving his country.

While troops operating from large bases such as Camp Bastion have access to email and the internet, it is those in more remote postings who feel the shortcomings of the postal service most keenly, he said.

He added that a common complaint from soldiers at his position was: “We know we’ve got post back there; why can’t they get it out here?”

He said: “I’m sure there are reasons behind it but it is something that needs to be worked on.

“No doubt I’ll be asked numerous times and it’s the one thing I’ll bring up – the change in the guys’ attitudes, their facial expressions and just their general morale when post rocks up.”

He added: “I got a Christmas card from my dad two weeks ago, and I was a bit miffed. But listening to the guys that’s the least of the worries, they’re getting very late post.”

KEEP SHOUTING IT OUT HARRY AS BROWN CAN'T HEAR YOU

03.03.08, 1:10am

Keep shouting for the lads out there Harry they really need someone to make Brown understand, it could give them useless tv posing chefs someting to do rather than take the cheap range products from the poor just to support expensive free range and organic, I don't think the lads on front line have time to worry if it is free range or organic. I have tried some forces rations I was given and I found the decent but I would not want to stuck out there surviving on them it must be very boreing to eat. Good Luck but you will soon learn you have to keep shouting.

BRING THEM HOME FOR A DECENT MEAL

02.03.08, 10:13pm

It would be far better to bring our troops home from Afghanistan and give them a decent meal. Perhaps they could safe guard our boarders from the EU, It would save lives and save our taxpayers some money before we go bust

THE EU AND TROPPS FOOD

02.03.08, 3:53pm

The EU is takling all our funds no wonder the troops cant get decent food services or equipment. our politicians have taken to lying about everything, and any one who tells the truth is lambasted.
Parliament seems to have become the centre for all deit and lies.
We no longer trust our leaders, as matter of fact it was said about one group , how do you know when they are lying, the answer, "when their lips arfe moving".
Its hugely disappointing and now in small referendums all over the country 88% of participants want a referendum. We want no more excuses.
