GOVERNMENT 'LETTING TROOPS DOWN'

David Cameron says the Government has broken the military covenant

Tuesday March 4,2008

Conservative leader David Cameron has accused the Government of "breaking the military covenant" as he launched a Commission to draw up proposals to improve support for Britain's armed forces.

Mr Cameron said ministers were letting troops down on equipment, healthcare, family support and accommodation and promised a defence review to ensure that a future Tory government would match the demands it made on the military with the resources it provided them.

But he declined to say whether he would match the Government's pledge of £7.7bn additional defence funding by 2011 in last year's Comprehensive Spending Review.

Labour accused the Tory leader of "damaging troop morale" by claiming the covenant between the armed forces and the Government was broken.

Defence Minister Bob Ainsworth said he was "behind the curve", as the Government had already launched a Command Paper designed to improve support for troops, families and veterans.

Mr Cameron was joined at the London launch of the new Commission by Falklands hero Simon Weston, who will sit on the panel, and author Freddie Forsyth, who will chair it. Both stressed that their report, due in September, will be independent and non-party political.

The Tory leader said: "I believe the military covenant is well and truly broken, and I am determined that the Conservative Party will fix it.

"This Commission will look at how the Government and society can better fulfil our obligations under the military covenant. It will look at all the issues that affect our Armed Forces, from training and recuperation to the welfare of their families and their wider relationship with society."

Mr Cameron, who will not be bound by the Commission's recommendations, accused the Government of cutting defence spending to its lowest level since the 1930s, leaving the armed forces 5,500 under strength. Troops were forced to go into action without necessary equipment like night-vision goggles, while the Ministry of Defence spent £2 billion refurbishing its Whitehall HQ, he said.

He highlighted frontline troops' complaints about limited phone and email contact with their families, as well as the policy of counting leave from the day they depart their posts, rather than the day they arrive home in the UK.

TRUEBLUESPIRIT - TRAITORS WERE HANGED?

05.03.08, 2:31am

Just what are the pacifists traitors about? Defending their country? Hardly. Afghanistan has no bearing on freedom or anything else in Britain. This war is as wrong as the war in Iraq. Bombing Afghanees into kingdom come because of the Taliban has nothing to do with defence of king/queen and country nor any rights of British citizens. The Afghanees have rights too. Rights to live in peace.

The ones who should be hanged are those dropping bombs on innocent civilians in Afghanistan under the guise of killing off the enemy. Britain has been thrown out of Afghanistan 3 times so far and is set for a fourth. They will join the ranks of the Russians whom the Taliban also threw out. This is no little village brigade fighting for their rights. These people are formidable.

The pacifists as you call them know all this. The ignorant still think war solves everything. Well the British Government can't even properly equip the British soldier to do their dirty work for them. In Afghanistan they are ill equipped, ill fed, and morale is low. Not even the British Government treats these lads right.

Start there Truebluespirit and do some reading before you talk about hanging someone. It is violent people such as you who glorify these wars - but don't fight them yourselves. Get real!

LABOUR HAVE ABUSED OUR ARMED FORCES

04.03.08, 5:59pm

Labour have dismantled everything of any value or standard in this country. Our Forces Hospitals were amongst the best.
I think it is absolutely appalling that our brave men and women are expected to be treated alongside everyone else in NHS hospital wards. They should most definately have their very own specialised hospitals who are experts in dealing with what these people have been through.
I'll believe it when I see it though.

GOOD OLD DAVID.

04.03.08, 4:22pm

ITS TYPICAL OF THE LABOUR PARTY NOT TO BE ON THE BALL. THIS GOVERNMENT SHOULD COME OUT OF IRAQ AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THEY SHOULD STOP SOLDIERS GOINGABROAD. ITS COSTING THE BRITISH TAXPAYERS TOO MUCH MONEY. AND HE LETS THE OLD AGED PENSIONERS HAVING TO TIGHTEN THEIR BELTS. NEVER VOTE FOR LABOUR AGAIN. IT WILL GET WORSE IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS. REGARDS. CAMERON IN PLEDGE TO ARMED FORCES

04.03.08, 2:29pm

More wishy washy statements from the Conservatives. When will this commission report back? What is needed is a statement that a new Conservative government will increase defence spending to at least 5% of GDP year on year for the foreseeable future. This is to repair the immense damage that Labour has done. The first step should be to award a generous pay increase all round. At the moment our brave boys and girls get about the same as one of Blunkett''s plastic bobbies.

A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

04.03.08, 12:28pm

I fully support David Cameron's stand on this issue. If I find out which service station refused to serve a soldier in uniform, I can guarantee that I will never visit it.

I have already told Starbucks that I will never buy anything there since they took a simllar treacherous and obscene attitude with the American armed services. I think every loyal British and American citizen should boycott Starbucks too! They didn't even have the courtesy to answer my email.

The government has certainly broken the covnant along with a few pacifist traders. Perhaps some of these wierdo pacifists would benefit from being made to feed and service our forces. Traitors used to be hung, an even better fate for them.
