DIANA GUARD ACCUSED OF LIES OVER HER BUGGING FEAR

Story Image

There seems to be no record Diana's home was checked for bugs

Wednesday March 5,2008

By Richard Palmer, Royal Correspondent

THE former head of the royal protection squad was yesterday accused of lying in the furore over Diana.

His credibility was questioned over how he dealt with Diana’s fear that she was being bugged.

Retired Deputy Assistant Commissioner David Meynell appeared to give contradictory accounts of the seriousness with which he took  Diana’s complaints that the security services were spying on her.

Lord Justice Scott Baker, the coroner at the inquest into Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed, even raised doubts about the evidence Mr Meynell gave to him.

Mr Meynell was asked to explain what action Scotland Yard took after Diana met him on October 18, 1994, and accused him of bugging her car and home.

Following accusations that police failed to take her complaints seriously, jurors heard that in a witness statement drafted only three weeks ago Mr Meynell implied he ordered a special police team to sweep her car and apartment for bugs.

In his statement, which implied that the sweep was carried out after his 1994 meeting with Diana, he said that the search had found nothing.

But yesterday he claimed that his wording had been clumsy. What he had meant to say was that the sweep he was referring to had happened a year before that meeting and not in response to it.

He claimed he was unable to organise a second sweep in 1994 because Diana would not co-operate. He also told the jury that no record of the earlier check had been made and he did not tell Diana her home had been given the all-clear.

SEARCH DIANA INQUEST:

But Michael Mansfield, QC, for Mohamed Al Fayed, who claims Diana and Dodi were murdered by MI6 on the orders of Prince Philip because they were about to marry and have a child, suggested that Mr Meynell was lying.

He alleged that he had changed his story to tie in with an account given by former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Condon.

Lord Condon and other police witnesses have suggested that nothing was ever done in response to fears that she was being spied on because she refused to co-operate.

Mr Mansfield said there ought to be a record of the sweep for listening devices, whenever it happened.

But there did not appear to be one and none of her former staff remembered it. Even if nothing was found, police owed Diana an explanation but, by Mr Meynell’s admission, they had not given her one, said Mr Mansfield.

“She really was being treated as a second class citizen, wasn’t she?” he said. “Did you really have a search and where is any verification of it?”

Mr Mansfield suggested police had not wanted to investigate because they suspected that the security services were bugging the Princess. Mr Meynell denied this. Lord Justice Scott Baker said: “The problem is that nobody from her staff appears to have known about this search and it is very difficult to identify when it happened or, indeed, if it happened.”

But Mr Meynell insisted he had only told the jury things as he  remembered them. He called Mr Mansfield’s allegation “ridiculous”.

The inquest in London continues.

WELL JESSICA IN PREVIOUS INTERVIEWS BOTH KES ..........

01.05.08, 11:45am

Well Jessica in previous interviews both Kes Wingfield and trevor Rees Jones both categorically stated that Henri Paul was not drunk. Also considering Trevor Rees Jones's injuries and subsequent memory loss how did he manage to obtain a job as head of security in Iraq? I would have thought that hi injuries and memory loss would have made him a liability.

DO YOU KNOW NIMUE

30.04.08, 3:47pm

i do believe some people will just swallow anything they are told,
and we wonder why this country is in the state it is in,
i do believe the bodyguards lied, of course they did, you only have to read the bodyguard story book to realise that one.

what i would like to know is this,
both deny Henry Paul was drunk, Why?
hasn't the coroner now said he was?
so what lie is being told,
he wasnt drunk ?
or he was but we let him drive anyway so we didn't get the sack for answering back,

CROWOOD, IT WAS DOMINIQUE LECOMTE WHO GAVE THE OFFICIAL VERDICT OF JUST A SUICIDE BY CREMATION.

07.03.08, 8:48am

Crowwood it was Dominique Lecomte and Bernard Nicolas in April 2000 who confirmed the suicide by cremation .

Professor Mangin was also in it as he was, with the Henri Paul rhubarb crumble and the affront to scientists.!

They were sent by the Government to help them out as the Govenment was in on the corruption which is why Chirac is going to court an there is such a mess.

Dominique Lecomte was always picked specially for the 'delicate' cases which needed cover-up for dodgy numbers and she has always been most helpful to the Government when they were in a pickle which is why there have been calls for her being struck ff for so long and why secould notpossibly have been cross-examined in the UK over her Henri Paul 'affront to any scientist' when she tried to make Henri Paul into the world's biggest scapegoat!

It 's great you're doing research though Crowood.

it is always so interesting and answers so many questions.

PENNY

The only reason I mentioned Prof.Knight's name was in response to Mrs A's post re a Professor is appearing at the inquest today - thought she might like to google him as he has written many articles etc for medical journals.

I know nothing of the structure of the french goverment regarding post mortems or any other information she has been called upon to the french regarding her work

The only information I have read regarding postmortem reports is that given at scott baker's inquest. The person I mentioned has to my knowledge had nothing whatever to do with these proceedings.

CASSIDYSKYE, THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE MOST BENEFITTED

06.03.08, 4:45pm

Cassidyskye, the people that have benifitted the most out of the death of Diana is firstly Charles and Camilla. This selfish sorry excuse of a man has now had his cake and still eating it, well I hope that he chokes on it. Whatsmore I hope that at some point he is reminded of the proverb ' Another man's meat is another man's poison'. I am sure that he will Karma an all.

The second lot is the royals themselves or so they foolishly think. Senior royals now believe that they have regained their star status, not a prayer in hells chance though I'm afraid. It is only the Queen, William, and Harry that the people really want theycould not give a fig if they never saw the rest ever again.

So, the whole Diana episode has backfired on them, they will never gain the former glory and respect that they once held.
