MILITARY MISSIONS 'UNDER-FUNDED'

Military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq cost over £3bn this year

Monday March 10,2008

The Government has been accused of years of under-funding military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan following the disclosure that the costs have almost doubled over the past 12 months to more than £3bn.

Ministers said that the increased costs reflected the need to purchase new defensive equipment to protect troops against the constantly changing insurgent threat.

But the Tories said the decision to pour in extra cash amounted to a belated recognition by ministers that for years operations in the two countries were not properly funded.

The Commons Defence Committee, which revealed the increases, expressed "surprise" that the cost of operations in Iraq was rising at a time when British troop numbers there were falling.

According to the Ministry of Defence's latest "spring estimates", spending on operations in the two theatres for the current financial year is forecast to be £3.297 billion - a 94% increase on last year's total of £1.698 billion.

The forecast for Iraq is £1.449 billion, up 52% since the last set of "winter estimates", while operations in Afghanistan are expected to cost £1.424 billion, an increase of 48% on the previous estimates.

The increases will be paid for out of the Government's reserves and will not affect the defence budget

Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth said that the Government had a duty to ensure personnel in the field were properly equipped, while welfare changes, such as the payment of operational bonuses, had also pushed up costs.

But shadow defence secretary Liam Fox said: "We have been complaining for a long time that these operations are under-resourced. It appears that this is something the Government seems to belatedly recognise only now."

Overall, the MoD is forecasting that it will need an additional £2.192 billion for the current financial year over and above the previous winter estimate.

SHAME

10.03.08, 2:30pm

If this war is so essential, why are our fellow Nato nations, with exception of USA and Canada, not doing their fair share ?
I cannot believe the money is going on improving safety over there, either for our Forces, when we see them in unprotected vehicles, with inadequate equipment.
We see they get little in the way of compensation.
The truth is, we are held hostages by the Americans, who will not let us leave Iraq for politicial reasons.
They claim that our forces are needed to keep their supply lines open, so that they can get their cokes, or whatever.
They could use private firms.
Bring our boys home now.

"FEW PEOPLE WILL OBJECT TO THE INVESTMENT BEING MADE IN BETTER FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT FOR OUR TROOPS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.

10.03.08, 1:25pm

Almost all of this country object to our troops being there in the first place!

The exception being this pathetic dictatorial government headed by an unelected leader.

AFGHAN AND IRAQ COSTS YOU THE TAXPAYER £3BN

10.03.08, 1:09pm

Has'nt Tony Bliar's illegal warmongering done us all proud.

We are left to pick up the tab whilst he swans around the grateful American lecture circuit making himself millions of dollars by telling them all HOW HE SCREWED BRITAIN AND GOT AWAY WITH IT.

Also bear in mind that Gordon and his Incompetence Party were complicit in all this.

THEY ALWAYS WIN / WE ALWAYS LOSE
