Rooms in London are £115 a night

Wednesday March 12,2008

By Louise Barnett, Consumer Editor

HOTELS in Britain are the most expensive in Europe with prices up 12 per cent in the past year, research has revealed.

A room for one night in Britain now costs an average of £106.

Norway and Switzerland were the joint second most expensive in Europe with an average price of £99.

Bargain-hunting tourists should try the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – where rooms cost an average of £59, making them the cheapest countries in the Hotels.com price index.

Bath topped the UK league in 2007 – even though prices in the spa city were down two per cent on 2006 – with one night there costing an average of £117.

London was £115 a night, Oxford was £113, while Aberdeen’s prices soared 34 per cent to an average of £109.

David Roche, senior vice-president of Hotels.com, said: “While Bath’s combination of high visitor levels and luxury hotels means that it retains its place as the most expensive city in the UK, our data shows that Oxford and London are catching up fast.”

Coventry was the cheapest UK destination in the index at £57 a night.

The most expensive cities in the world were Moscow at £194, New York at £143, and Dubai and Venice at £125.
