PM's claims are insult to battered Middle Britain

HARD-WORKING people will not know whether to laugh or cry about Gordon Brown’s preposterous claim to be a champion of Middle Britain.

The truth is that 11 years of Labour rule have seen countless attacks on the interests of the conscientious families that Mr Brown is suddenly pretending to care about.

Occupational pensions have been decimated thanks to a £100billion tax raid, saving for retirement has been rendered pointless for many through the remorseless extension of means-testing and criminals have been emboldened by early-release schemes and non-custodial sentences.

Police forces seeking to adapt to Labour’s targets culture have learned to ignore serious crimes and instead victimise motorists.

Council tax payers have seen their bills double, workers have suffered a 10 per cent rise in national insurance payments and home-buyers have been hammered by huge increases in stamp duty bills.

The welfare state has remained unreformed, allowing the most feckless people to go to the front of the queue for social housing and to exist in a state of permanent dependency. Absurdly, Mr Brown’s administration even gives 300,000 abusers of Class A drugs incapacity benefit, a premium-rate welfare payment.

Service personnel who have fought for this country are treated, equipped and paid shoddily but foreign criminals are sheltered and indulged, thanks to Labour’s dreaded Human Rights Act. Travellers who flout planning laws to build illegal encampments and many other varieties of chancer can use the same legislation to thwart the interests of justice.

Head teachers have been pressed not to expel disruptive and thuggish pupils to the great detriment of the majority of children who want to learn. The hard workers whose taxes pay for the NHS are least able to use it because GPs have been allowed to walk away from out-of-hours medical care.

Mr Brown is behaving like a slimy suitor trying to worm his way back into a maiden’s good books after continually letting her down. His transparent insincerity renders his performance cringeworthy. Whatever he says or does now, Middle Britain has found him out. It will not be fooled again.
