Topiary figures of the Beatles in Liverpool

Wednesday March 26,2008

By Tony Bonnici

AT the height of their fame The Beatles never forgot their roots.

And now here they are again back in their home city – transformed into the Fab Foliage.

The world’s most famous pop band, who have been immortalised in so many ways, have been resurrected as topiary figures outside Liverpool’s South Parkway railway station.

The life-size group were unveiled yesterday, prompting Merseyside wags to dub the artistic masterpiece A Thicket To Ride.

John, Paul, George and Ringo would have liked that – and other excruciating titles such as Bark In The USSR and Shrubber Soul.

The display is one of a series of public art works for the station, which provides a key link to Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport.

The “Bush Beatles” were lovingly crafted into shape by Italian gardeners in Tuscany, whose topiary artists are the best in the world. It took them 18 months. So how much did it cost?

Nobody’s saying. Wirral horticultural firm the Bigger Plant Company, who installed the figures, insist that it must remain a secret.

But the betting is that it cost the city a fortune. What Sir Paul’s ex, Heather Mills, might call her hedge fund.
