EX-ROCK CHIEF TO GET HUGE PAYOFF

Former Northern Rock chief executive Adam Applegarth to receive £760,000 payoff

Monday March 31,2008

The former boss of Northern Rock will be entitled to a £760,000 payoff despite the bank being rescued by the Government, it has been confirmed.

Adam Applegarth, who stepped down as chief executive of the mortgage lender in December, could receive £63,333 a month for up to a year under the severance deal, the nationalised lender's 2007 annual report said.

The document also revealed that Northern Rock made a loss of £167.6m during the year as it tried to fight off nationalisation, compared to a £626.7 million profit the year before.

Northern Rock, which is now under the chairmanship of City troubleshooter Ron Sandler, also said it pledged to repay £24 billion in Government loans by the end of 2010.

The annual report discloses that Mr Applegarth was entitled to a "termination payment" of £760,000 when he left on December 12 last year. This is payable monthly until November 16 this year, but will be reduced if the former boss gets another job paying more than £20,000 in salary before that time.

The annual report said Mr Applegarth's settlement terms were "substantially less" than the amount he was otherwise due when he left last year.

Northern Rock also agreed to contribute £5,000 plus VAT towards Mr Applegarth's legal fees, it was disclosed. And £75,000 of his mortgage will continue to be charged at the concessionary staff interest rate until November.

Northern Rock said there had been a £12.2 billion outflow of retail deposits in the year, compared with inflows of £2.5 billion in 2006. This followed the run on the bank as customers queued to withdraw savings in the aftermath of Northern asking the Bank of England for emergency assistance.

Northern Rock blamed its 2007 loss on exceptional costs related to the company's strategic review after the money markets froze last summer and ruined its business model, as well as writedowns on investments linked to the credit crunch. But the bank said it made an underlying pre-tax profit of £421.9 million after stripping out the effects of the non-recurring costs. This compares to £587.2 million a year earlier.

The bank warned on Monday that it would be "significantly" loss-making this year due to further restructuring costs, higher funding bills and the deteriorating credit environment.

HUGH PAYOUT.

01.04.08, 2:16pm

The man ought to be left penniless. No payout, no pension.

After all, he's played with other people's money, and now should pay the penalty.

If you don't want to pay, don't play.

WELL ROCK ON! I WISH SOMEONE WOULD LEAD ME BY THE NOSE TO SOME COMPANY I COULD HAPPILY MISMANAGE AND THEN GET A HUGE PAYOFF

01.04.08, 12:42am

I thought this sort of thing was Only in America. Did we export it or import it! .... The concept I am referring to, do your worst, let incompetence reign, and then get the payoff of payoffs when the time comes.

This makes a sham of all the reviews that the average employee gets at the end of the year when rises are coming up. Did you do your job? Did you do it well? Here's your rise - accordingly.

There's something wrong with this whole idea of CEO's walking away with "a golden umbrella" it is called in the USA. Wherever it is called and whatever it is called, it still stinks to high heaven.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS......

31.03.08, 11:47pm

Welcome to the back to front world we are forced to live in today, where criminals are treated like victims, and victims are simply ignored, where bad behaviour at school gets you rewards, but good behaviour gets you into trouble, and where the worse your performance at your job, the more money you're given!
I'm not surprised slappy has that smug look on his puss. 3/4 of a million pounds for making a balls up of your job is enough to make you want to run to work and punch the boss on the nose, before crashing into his car and giving the finger to your ten best clients! If that doesn't get you a raise, I don't know what will!

SICK WORLD ECONOMY

31.03.08, 11:04pm

It's quite a lot of money, not truly massive compareed to £12 billion. That's enough to pay 16,000 people £750,000.

Money used to hard currency. That is each note represented a lump of real gold. There is now so much paper or fiat money in the world that instead of an ounce of gold being $1000 it's more like $50,000 if you were to exchange it all.

The poor chap tried his best to hold back the flood but when your bank gets the finger pointed at it then it will collapse.

The scary truth is that all banks are on the edge of collapse. The government backed Northen Rock because without it the whole house of cards would come fluttering down.

You may be interested to know that the price of silver has dropped slightly. No one is seling it, they are all sitting on it, because it's massively under valued. The stock markets keep plunging but anything to do with silver is static or rising.

We are headed for the biggest deepest recesion the world has ever seen. This chaps £750k may not go very far unless he buys gold and silver.

as a result of this appalling government. Where is the justice?
We have MP's lining their pockets at OUR expense, buying themselves 2nd homes at OUR expense, all the top leaders or executives getting 'golden handshakes' even when they have failed abysmally at OUR expense, NHS managers overseeing wards where people are dying in droves from hospital acquired diseases, again getting so called 'golden handshakes' and then RE-EMPLOYED ! My endowment polices not paying my mortgage but the Directors of these huge companies raking in wonderful paypackets and bonuses

WHERE IS THE JUSTICE?

WHERE IS THE BLOODY JUSTICE?

TYPIFIES THE ROT IN OUR GOVERNMENT AND SOCIETY

31.03.08, 4:59pm

In future history books, this will undoubtedly be referred to as typical of the pervasive ROT and DISEASE in our government and society as the UK fell into ruin.

If this man had the slightest bit of integrity and decency left, he would donate ALL of this shameful payment to assist those persons thrown out of work at Northern Rock through his and others' gross incompetence and mismanagement.
