WHAT started out as a buzzword in business circles has firmly established itself in the wider world of sport, education, entertainment, medicine and even government.       

NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming – is a technique that allows people to understand and control their thoughts, feelings and behaviours, with the goal of improving performance.

Psychological illusionist and TV magician Derren Brown has been popularly associated with NLP since it was rumoured that he used it in his ‘Russian roulette’ act.

Described by some experts as an owner’s handbook for the human brain, NLP has a broad range of applications and, as a result, the demand for trained practitioners of NLP is growing.  

These applications include the medical world, and research is currently under way to assess the benefits for patients through an NHS-backed programme co-ordinated between a Nottingham-based general practice and coaching and NLP specialist Affective Business Coaching.

Founder, Darren Stevens, said: “This is a 10-month pilot scheme that will offer personal life coaching free to patients, based on NLP techniques and principles.”

Terry Elston, director and trainer at NLP World, runs NLP practitioner training courses. His skills were called upon by Whitehall.

He said: “We were contacted by a senior civil servant in Whitehall and we went along to deliver a programme to a group of eight of his colleagues. They were impressed enough by the initial programme to invite us back for some one-to-one NLP coaching.”
