THREE MILLION HOLES IN ROADS

Drivers contending with over three million holes in roads

Wednesday April 2,2008

Drivers are having to contend with more than three million holes in local authority roads in England and Wales.

While roads suffer from around one million potholes, there are a further 2.5 million road openings made during streetworks by utility companies, a report by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) found.

The Alliance's report also said there was a shortfall of more than £1 billion in highway maintenance budgets and an 11-year backlog of maintenance work.

Some roads faced a 65-year wait for resurfacing, while local authorities estimated they were receiving only half the budget they needed to keep their roads in reasonable condition.

The AIA report showed there were an average of 4,268 potholes per local authority in north west England in 2006/07. This includes Blackburn, famous for the line in the 1967 Beatles song A Day in the Life which talked of "4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire".

The report said that £53 million was paid out in compensation claims for damage to vehicles or road traffic accidents due to road structural conditions across England and Wales in 2006/07.

AIA chairman Jim Crick said: "Roads are a vital asset and our most valuable one. We all depend on them every day and it's time the under-funding of their maintenance was addressed. There are so many demands on highways maintenance budgets now that it is almost impossible to keep pace with them.

"Trenches dug by utility and service companies are a necessary evil but reduce longer-term road life by around 30%.

"Our figures concentrate the mind on why regulations now available through the Traffic Management Act, to co-ordinate and control such openings (of the road surface) should be strictly enforced."

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "We want local authorities to implement a system of regular, well-managed maintenance - not to leave things until they deteriorate to the point that repairs become urgent and more costly."

HOLES IN THE ROAD AND THE HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE

03.04.08, 2:39pm

At the end of the summer 07 my son hit a pot hole in the road whilst on his motor bike, the damaged caused came to over £350, when he made a claim against Cotswold District Council, the reply was " The council were not liable as the road had been inspected whin a 5 week period and had been reported as minor repair work as stated by the government. The attitude of the council was diabolical, there has to be some sort of responsibility as the name of their department suggests otherwise the department should be called "the department of we don't care but we have a nice wage at the end of the month"

LIKE MILLIONS OF OTHER FELLOW BRITONS, I PAID MY VED YESTERDAY

02.04.08, 12:24pm

Can somebody tell me, WHERE exactly is my £185 going?

The lane past my house is actually in better condition than the main road less than a mile away.

The modus operandi seems to be:

Man with wheelbarrow full of asphalt and shovel plops lump of asphalt into hole and flattens. Rain comes, away washes asphalt, hole reappears, many drivers break suspension units, man with wheelbarrow comes back five years later.

It's a joke!

The cure is simple - get rid of this disasterous gang of dogma driven fools and re-instate democracy.

WHY BOTHER TO FIX THE ROADS

02.04.08, 10:24am

Why should local councils spend money on roads when they could use the money to employ 'One-legged, Ethiopian lesbian, single parent outreach co-ordinators'?
I bet senior Govt. ministers have shares in companies like Kwikfit, Dunlop, Koni and other companies who benefit from rubbish roads.

THE BRITISH USED TO HAVE A COUNTRY TO BE PROUD OF

02.04.08, 9:34am

Us Brits used to have pride in our country and its infrastructure. Then we got three terms of Nu Labour.

Then things went downhill fast.

After 11 years of Nu Labour neglect, the British road system would not now look out of place in a third-world banana republic. The only things we can be proud of now are our potholes and worn out surfaces!
