TRIUMPH: Johnny Depp & Helena Bonham Carter star in the film Sweeney Todd

Friday April 4,2008

By Catherine Boyle

PROFITS at Pinewood Shepperton, the studio company where the next James Bond film will be shot, were hit by the US writers’ strike last year.

The company hopes to replace some of the lost revenue by developing its television business, which includes providing the studio for a new series of Gladiators.

The film Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street was made at Pinewood.

Chairman Michael Grade said pre-tax profits fell 26 per cent last year to £5.3million. Film revenues fell 13 per cent to £19.5million.

The shares lost 10p to 242dp. Grade, chairman of ITV and former chairman of the BBC, said it had been a “challenging” year, adding: “Delays to production starts and the Writers Guild of America strike, now resolved, impacted film revenues.”

The company was also hit by the weak US dollar and changed tax laws.
