SCOTS VOTE FOR A NEW ANTHEM

ROUSING: Three tenors sing before a Scotland match

Wednesday April 9,2008

By Kevin Turner

TO some it is a rousing musical masterpiece that cannot fail to stir their inner passions – while others regard Flower of Scotland as a tuneless, outdated dirge.

Now the Corries’ folk tune commemorating Robert the Bruce’s victory over King Edward II at Bannockburn could soon be challenged for its title of Scotland’s leading unofficial national anthem.

Composer Edward Cairney hopes his new Pop Idol-style campaign could see one of his creations become the country’s official national anthem.

He has written 13 new songs for the public to vote for their favourite tune through a website.

Mr Cairney, who lives in Arbroath, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1320, has devised a voting system to establish a favourite among the Scottish public.

He said: “Scotland has more than one national anthem. When the Scottish football and rugby teams play international matches, Flower of Scotland is played.

“When a Scottish athlete wins a gold medal at an international event, they play Scotland the Brave. And there’s another four or five realistic contenders all vying to be the official national anthem of Scotland.”

The Corries’ hit was first sung at Scotland football matches in 1993 but SFA chief George Peat described it as “a dirge” last year. After Peat’s outburst, musician-turned-politician Pete Wishart said Scotland should run an X-Factor-style TV show to pick a national anthem.

Mr Cairney’s Scots songs can be found at the website www.scottishanthem.co.uk

YOU VOTED HIM IN YOU KEEP HIM

11.04.08, 9:49am

To Emperor Ming
Have a care for us please, we did not vote him in you did, and we don't want him back.

I will now start a campaign to rebuild Hadrian's wall and electrify it , just in case you ever send him back.

Do you ever give a thought to the fact that we Scots think just as badly of him as you do, and we are nice wee souls you know.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH FLOWER OF SCOTLAND

10.04.08, 8:14pm

So what will happen if we carry on singing flower of Scotland as we always have and I suspect always will.

Do you think we will be taxed when we sing it or
go to jail.

I want to know if this guy is English or related to Gordon Brown.

SCOTS VOTE FOR NEW ANTHEM

Flower of Scotland is fine so long as it is sung with pace.
Most songs sound like dirges when you slow them down.
A nice " canter " is the proper pace!
