POPTASTIC: The Who's Roger Daltry beside the Magic Bus

Wednesday April 9,2008

By Elisa Roche, Showbusiness Editor

THE WHO legend Roger Daltrey is giving fans the chance to win this beautifully-restored Volkswagen camper van signed by himself and band-mate Pete Townshend.

Roger was just 21 and had been lead singer of The Who for a year when the Magic Bus prize van first hit the road in 1965.

But standing next to the vehicle outside the Royal Albert Hall in London yesterday, Roger, now 64, looked as youthful as ever.

He said: “This van is one of a kind. She’s all restored, she’s got The Who on the stereo – she’s the works.”

Taking its name from The Who’s 1968 hit, the Magic Bus is up for grabs to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, of which Roger is patron. Entry is online at www.thewhomagicbus.com and costs £5, with all profits going to help to build specialist hospital wards for teenagers suffering from cancer.

All who enter will receive a free download of a previously unreleased version of Magic Bus.

Roger said: “It is horrific that there are so few special wards for teenagers with cancer. I am delighted to launch this unique competition.”

The van is spray-painted with The Who’s iconic target logo and has been completely gutted and re-fitted by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The Teenage Cancer Trust, founded in 1990, has so far built eight specialist care units across Britain, each costing more than £1million.

Paul Weller, Joan Armatrading and David Gray are taking part in a week of sold-out gigs for the charity at the Royal Albert Hall this week.
