COME ON YOU REDCOATS

Culloden

Friday April 11,2008

By Kevin Turner

It was a battle – but descendants of the Redcoats will once again face Jacobites on Culloden Moor next week.

A global search launched in January struggled to attract children with links to Redcoat

government troops to open a new £9million Culloden visitor centre.

However, a last-minute flood of entries means the attraction can be unveiled as planned next Wednesday.

Scott Hay, 11, of Kincraig, Inverness-shire, and Philip Nicol, six, of Inverness, beat dozens of other entrants to gain the honour. Scott’s ancestor at Culloden was William Hay from Glenbucket in Aberdeenshire, who fought under renowned senior Jacobite commander Major General John Gordon of Glenbucket.

Philip is descended from troops on both sides of the battle.

His family tree reveals three brothers of the Farquharson family of Allargue in Aberdeenshire, two of whom were officers with the Jacobite army.

The other brother was a Redcoat who fought with the Hanoverian government troops on that fateful day in 1746.

Scott and Philip will cut the ribbon at next week’s official opening. Their names will each be etched upon the visitor centre’s opening plaque.

The National Trust for Scotland’s Culloden project co-ordinator, Alexander Bennett, said: “We were thrilled with the response to our search.

“With all the vital historical details that participants shared with us, it is heartening to see so many young people researching their roots.”
