MOTHER REFUSED ORGANS FROM DAUGHTER

Laura suffered massive brain damage after a suspected asthma attack

Friday April 11,2008

A mother in desperate need of a kidney transplant has been denied the organs of her dying daughter.

Laura Ashworth, 21, was unconscious for days after she suffered massive brain damage following a suspected asthma attack.

Her mother Rachel Leake, 39, who has kidney failure, was at her bedside when she died at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

But Ms Ashworth's kidneys were given to strangers despite her personal wish to help her mother.

Ms Ashworth, the mother of a two-year-old girl, was on the NHS Organ Donor Register and had told her mother she would help her if the time came - but this was never formally recorded.

Ms Leake, from Bierley, West Yorkshire, said her daughter would have been upset that she was able to help other people and not her own mother."

Ms Leake has suffered from kidney failure for seven years after developing complications from diabetes.

The Human Tissue Authority (HTA), the body responsible for implementing the consent requirements of the Human Tissue Act 2004, defended its decision to allocate Ms Ashworth's organs to strangers.

Adrian McNeil, chief executive of the HTA, said: "The central principle of matching and allocating organs from the deceased is that they are allocated to the person on the UK Transplant waiting list who is most in need and who is the best match with the donor.

"In line with this central principle, a person cannot choose to whom their organ can be given when they die; nor can their family."

WE SHOULD BE THE LAST PEOPLE TO SAY THIS BUT THEY WERE RIGHT.

11.04.08, 9:42pm

We are the parents in Scotland whose children had their organs removed at post mortem without our knowledge or consent.

We are dead against the opt out system we believe it will put lives in danger.

We openly encourage people to donate for transplant using the opt in system.
If you are not willing to give your own then what right do you have to expect any organ for you or yours.

This case is heartbreaking but unfortunately in law they were correct.

BUT was their an opportunity for this daughter to be told that she should have left this in writing. It does not seem so if she had such a massive brain hemorrhage.
Without specific authorisation from the daughter the transplant team were in a very sticky situation.

The people at the top of the list get the organs.

My prayers will be for the mum that she gets a very good match soon unfortunately the chance of getting such a close match is slim.

In future they plan on opting everyine in. It's a bad idea to carry a doner card because they will kill you for your organs rather than risk damaging them by trying to keep you alive. This is now another reason not to carry a doner card. Instead have a will that says who gets your organs.

If the tissue match between mother and daughter were close enough for a successful transplant, (and presumably the 'Jobsworth' who made this decision didn't even bother to check), the daughter's last wishes should most decidedly have been honoured.

It would have been a wonderful comfort to both mother and daughter.

Such a great pity for them both. And such a great pity morons like this exist to block their wish.

Not very encouraging is it? i can understand how this mother feels.

I would rather my 'body parts' be donated as priority to my immediate family members first.

it is like giving your assets to your family when you pass on ..

not knowing all the details, , comes to mind this is completely out of order, i.e. going against wishes!! but definitely stand corrected if and when all the details are published
