NO BAIL FOR SHANNON’S STEPFATHER

Story Image

HELD: Craig Meehan

Saturday April 12,2008

By Paul Jeeves

THE stepfather of Shannon Matthews was refused bail yesterday on charges of possessing child porn.

Supermarket fishmonger Craig Meehan, 22, was remanded in custody after being accused of having 130 sickening images on his home computer.

Magistrates ruled that he could not be freed on bail. Public feelings are running high over nine-year-old Shannon’s disappearance and the alleged involvement of family members.

Dressed in the black “Ronaldo” Manchester United top which he has worn throughout the

seven weeks since Shannon was  reported missing, Meehan appeared, handcuffed, before magistrates in Dewsbury, West Yorks.

Flanked by security guards, he did not even glance towards the public gallery during the two-hour proceedings.

A large number of family and friends packed the court to see him make his first appearance since his girlfriend Karen Matthews – Shannon’s mother – was charged in connection with concealing information from police over the girl's whereabouts.
