SOLDIERS TAKE OUT PRIVATE INSURANCE
Soldiers are taking out private life and accident insurance
Increasing numbers of soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq are taking out private life and accident insurance.
Sources in the insurance industry and the Army said many servicemen and women are buying policies to boost Ministry of Defence compensation pay-outs.
Firms are advertising policies on the internet, and one, Abacus, offers a special online application form for servicemen and women.
Conservative MP Keith Simpson, who represents Mid Norfolk, said many people would be surprised.
"I think they would be," he said. "It reinforces the impression that many people have that a duty of care is not being given."
He added: "The question you have to ask is this because soldiers feel that Government compensation offered is not enough. You also wonder what the premiums must be."
In November, a report leaked to a newspaper said soldiers could pay nearly £1,000 a year for policies.
Abacus offers kit, accident and life policies to soldiers and said it has started to offer a "free Armed Forces will".
Army sources said there were a number of cases where injured soldiers are in dispute with insurance firms over pay-outs.
One, Private Simon Peacock, 22, of Basildon, Essex, is arguing for more after being hit by shrapnel while serving in Afghanistan with the Royal Anglian Regiment.

SOLDIERS PRIVATE INSURANCE

This has proved to be a neccesity as time and again the lads and lasses have had rubbish payouts.
They are only doing what any sensible person would do to help their families should something happen to them.
If, as some say that they are having to fight the companies for payouts, then that is disgusting. In these days of ridiculous amounts for repetitive strain injury then the system is skewed.
We can give money tag lag to people who have not earned a penny in their lives, but victimise a person who has served their country and been injured in the process.
When I go into my town and see the wasters who don`t work and think the world owes them everything they can milk out of the system, my heart sinks.
The minority of people who do this are dragging the hard workers down. They live off others` toil.
That goes for this goverment as well. I am totally digusted with the way that our forces are expected to fight for their rights as well as for their lives.

PRIVATE INSURANCE ???

I agree with CycinalStephen, check out the small print, ask about the EXCLUSIONS, terms & conditions and if you don't understand them talk to someone who is experienced and does not have a pecuniary interest. I've seen very few Insurance contracts where the risk is in favour of the insured, and where available usually have a qualifying period or delay before full protection is effected.

I can't help but say READ THE SMALL PRINT! Most policies specifically exclude 'Acts of warfare, civil disturbance, ...' etc. Insurance underwriters are in the busines of making money, NOT protecting policy-holders' rights!
